Last week we found a B-17 crash site. This week we look for the crash site of a HellCat fighter plane. We leave Pendleton. Wheat harvest is in full swing and there is lots of wheat waiting to be sold. Pass through the wheat fields Pass through Weston on the way to the "old" Tollgate Highway Take this road First couple of miles are paved Quick stop at Jubilee Lake After leaving Jubilee Lake, we ride for many miles and end up in Dayton WA. Some where in between we stop and take a little hike. Get a couple of pictures for LadyBug Trail is a little more than we wanted to ride the wees on, so we walk. After a little looking around, find the first sign of what we are looking for. Wreckage from a HellCat fighter that was flying out of Pasco WA during WWII. Knew it was going to be hard to find and due to the very steep terrain and lots of brush, was not sure how much it would be possible to find. Katy brought along a small flag to leave at the crash site. Since I was not sure if any more wreckage was going to be found, I left the flag here. While hiking back towards the trail, realized that there was small bit s of the plane all over if you just looked around carefully. Found some larger pieces Knew there was suppose to be a large piece of wing. Think I found it. Never find the engine, but as steep as it is, there is a good chance it rolled down the hill a good ways. Crawl (to steep to walk) back up to the trail and back to the wees. Some more pictures of the road between Jubilee Lake and Dayton in no particular order. The road starts out gravel and then turns into sections of either very rocky or very rutted. Heart shaped rock. A little steep and rocky on the lookout road. Ride through the wheat harvest on the way home. Good day or riding and exploring.
