    I searched....didn't find what I needed.

I am flying to Vegas next week. Wife and I want to rent a bike to go visit Lake Mead. Dealer has helmets, but not full face and first come first served. I prefer to use my own anyway.

Has anyone had an issue with carrying a helmet on a plane? Internet searches are mixed. Some say TSA doesn't allow. I cannot take the risk with my lid....any in site appreciated.

Did the same think last year, international flight to Vegas. Wore my gear on the plane, helmet as carry on.

Picked up my rental GS and had a blast in the Valley of Fire,

No problems at all with the Airplane people

    That's my experience

    Cheers

Carried it on a couple times inside a tailbag but only on domestic flights, also had my gloves inside and a towel to pad the helmet in transit (the overhead) and it always worked out fine as a carry on. Before boarding I had to open the tailbag to show them everything because under xray it must look pretty unusual!:D

You may run into one problem depending on what plane you fly in. If you end up on a smaller plane, the helmet may not fit in the overhead compartment. It also won't fit under the seat in front of you, and you are not allowed to hold it in your lap. You would have to gate check it, which means they hang a tag on it and put it in the luggage compartment. you will get it right back as soon as you get off the plane, but you don't have any control over how it's being handled.

If it is a larger plane, you won't have a bit of trouble.

I have flown with my helmet a couple of times. I just put it in a gym bag with my riding gear packed around it for protection.

I did the same as many said above. Flew from Dallas to Philly couple of weeks ago and carried both mine and wife's as carry-on.

Carry it by hand from the strap. Put some things in it and say it's your purse. :D

Helmet is okay, but they wanted me to put the parachute rig in a bag and put it in the overhead.

I've worn MX boots and carried a helmet on domestic and international flights with no issue so far.

Now, tire irons on the other hand.... :cry

Why would anyone think TSA would prohibit a helmet? It's not like you can take down a plane with one.

If anyone is interested I inquired about this recently when flying between Australia and New Zealand.

I was told (by check in staff at Qantas in Sydney) that motorcycle helmets are explicitly prohibited as carry on and they have to be checked.

    Just FYI

I flew to North Carolina and had to make a connection. I was able to carry my full face Shoei on the first flight. But the connecting flight was a smaller plane and I wasn't able to carry it on. I did not have it in a sturdy bag and after retrieving it from the luggage compartment on the smaller plane it had a hole in the outer skin on the lower left front. Bummer because I liked the helmet, especially the colors which were no longer available. I don't feel comfortable having someone else handle my helmet. If it has to be checked maybe you could find a way to put it in something that will protect it as well as possible. Once it is out of your hands who knows how they are going to toss it around. Nice helmets are expensive and it is a bummer to see it damaged. Perhaps it would be best wrapped it in bubble wrap in a box that doesn't look anything like a helmet.

I've only flown once with a helmet. It was a black full face helmet inside the lightweight carry bag.

Got through security, no problem. I was sure to orient the helmet in the X-Ray machine so it was laying on it's side.

I was able to carry it on the plane, and had it resting in my lap the whole flight. The attendant made a few complaining noises with words like "under seat" but I dutifully ignored them.

No way in hell the thing that protects my skull is going to rattle around in a bin, floor or in the dark destroyer abyss that is checked in luggage.

I carry a helmet on a plane all the time. Never had a problem.

Wear it. Tell them you have a medical condition that requires the helmet. They'll nod and ask no more questions. :)

I just flew from FL -> ME for a fly & ride. Domestically your allowed 1 carry on bag and a personal item. The helmet counts as your personal item.If there's no room in the overhead ,you might have to keep it under the seat in front of you. You should also invest in a helmet bag ,as their really not expensive and do protect the helmet quite well. I got the scorpion bag before my trip and it worked nicely.
