My mom pulled out this old photo of my grandpa on this unidentified motorcycle. We know he owned a few Harley's from the 1940's. We have a few pictures of him on that bike, and heard lots of stories (he lost 3 fingers in the drive chain of one).
Digging through some old photo's this picture showed up. This is in front of a barn that my mother remembers was on the old farm place, but she is unsure of the motorcycle. I have no idea what this bike is, it does not have a Harley motor, or Indian fenders. As we are in rural IA, I can't imagine there were too many other motorcycle dealers around during that era. I was really hoping someone smarter, wiser, and with a little more experience than I would have a clue.

Today that bike would be worth a lot more than the whole farm was worth back then.

"incorrect" only from the standpoint of a modern concours judge.

"Repainted", from the standpoint of the time the picture was taken.
The fenders may be correct for the particular year that bike was produced.

But definately an Indian four. The leaf spring front suspension alone would be sufficient to call it an Indian.

Wow, thanks for all the great help. Really appreciate the wealth of info you guys provided.

Now I really wonder where he came up with that bike. He never spoke of owning an Indian. Only the 2 Harleys he owned. This is one of those times you wish he was still alive to ask those questions...
