New user here. Considering a 4 or 5 day trip on the COBDR next summer. Coming from St Louis out I-70. Thought I'd trailer out and possibly bring my road bike also. I'm thinking I'll ride the COBDR 1 day north, overnight, then return, overnight, then ride 1 day south, overnight, and then return. Pretty sure I'll be camping. Any suggestions on a base camp? Just from a quick look at the map, I'm considering somewhere around Gunnison, but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Welcome, any point along your route will probably work. Try asking in the trip planning forum, you might get better responces from others possibly planning the same, good luck.

I would suggest staging at Silverton and riding from there..you will be in the heart of the best riding each way..

I just returned from riding the COBDR and just before that the CDR through Colorado as well.

Hands down if the weather cooperates and if you have intermediate or better skills, you want to base in the San Juans. Ouray and Silverton are not technically on the actual route but place you between Telluride and Lake City which are in the route. You can out & back to Telluride two different ways and the same to Lake City and back. You'll hit all the passes (and avoid the nasty Poughkeepsie Gulch).

Check the Tent space map, you will find a nice safe place to park and camp very close to the BDR, the TAT and the CDR.
And the price will be right
