    Good evening...

My husband BRian, known on ADVRider as PiffleMaster, arrived in Fairbanks this afternoon, following a run from Hay River, D2D , and points beyond...he and his son are riding KLRs, and Brian's bike needed an emergency roadside repair last evening in order to make it to Fairbanks today...

Ifound a contact number for someone on the Alaska emergency phone tree, and that person and Brian will be meeting tomorrow...however, Brian thinks he will need doohickey tools to do the repair he is anticipating...Having "done the doo" a couple of years ago, he did not anticipate needing to carry that particular set of tools on this trip...

If anyone on this forum lives in Fairbanks, and has a set Of doohickey tools to loan to a road weary traveller of fine repute, please PM the PiffleMaster...he would most certainly do the same thing for you....

I have some KLR tools, but I am currently 600 miles south of Fairbanks.
If Brian still hasnt found what he needs by Friday, I (might) be able to pack them on my way to ChenaHotSprings, although, As I will be riding 2-UP, it would probably be very much less effort to find and use a local set.
Question: How "broken" is the bike? Can it be safely ridden to Homer?
The chain tensioner device is not very complicated, nor does it appear to be very fragile.
    PM for phone #.
    good luck

    Pifflemaster,

It was great to meet you and your son at the campground across from Dawson City. I'm very sorry to hear about your KLR woes but I'm sure that some of the good folks from the Fairbanks ADV community will be able to help.

For some time, there has been a rumor around Alaska that a certain DR owned by a local grandmother has contributed to KLR problems on occasion. I've been fairly certain that there is no basis to that rumor, but since my DR and your KLR did occupy the same campground site for a few minutes, it might be possible that DR's and KLR's have some issues with each other. What do you think? :lol3

Best wishes on a speedy repair and a wonderful continuation of your trip!

If no one in Fairbanks has doohickey tools, I'm 250 miles south and have the tools, a spare doohickey and springs, new (and used) gaskets, and just about everything else that might be needed. Just send a PM.

I do not have a KLR (whew) and not the slightest idea of what a doo matcha call it is, but I have normal tools and can offer him a garage to work in. I live on the UAF campus; convienent if that is where he is staying. If ALCAN rider is providing the tools,, then he knows where I live (unfortunately). PM me if you want to use my garage and I'll send my address and phone number.

I'm the contact in Fai and talked with the pifflemaster, he'll be coming out to the shop in the morning and we'll tackle the problem. I don't have a KLR or know about this doohickey tool (I did touch one once... :lol3) but if its something we can't fab up or someone doesn't come forth with one tomorrow I'll call Dan or Richard Miller and I'm sure we'll be able to get the pifflemaster goin again.
So who are the KLR guys in Fai?

I just received confirmation from the importer that our order shipped...minus the 130s. :cry He's fresh out, but expecting some in July.

We have a couple left in stock...but I'm not sure for how long. If you don't already have one reserved, you'll probably want to do so. PM me your email address and I can get a invoice sent to you so we can hold one for ya.

The PiffleMaster and son have just left and are on the way south. Problem mostly resolved and doo-tool not needed. Learned a few things about KLRs today I didn't know...

As SolarMoose has already posted, t he PiffleMaster and his son are off and running again...having made new friends, and being fully appreciative of all the support they received from the fine folks of Alaska...

If you ever drop down into the southern climes, and venture to ride across the prairies, please accept our invitation to visit for some stories, meals and libations. The generosity of spirit you all have shown to Brian and Jono, and the ready response you all offered will be extended to any weary traveller who comes our way...

People from Manitoba, like people in Alaska, are a hardy folk, used to long cold winters, and the need to seize the opportunity to live life to its fullest...

Thank you all so very, very much....:clap

Foolishly assuming, that for once, this is a serious request :huh

    :lol3:lol3

The triangular-shaped thing (Doohickey, if ya wanna get technical) with the crescent slot... is the Doo(hickey) -
    [IMG]

Another view, as installed in the engine's left side, bottom of the crankcase, behind the flywheel -
    [IMG]
The bolt through the slot is accessible from outside the engine, and is tightened down to hold the doo from moving after the doo spring applies the proper tension to it.

Here is what has happened to a fair number of doohickeys. This one came from, IIRC, Supercrumpet's KLR -
    [IMG]

The replacement doohickeys that most people install, as well as those installed by the factory in most of the '08 and later machines, are of one piece rather than being a weldment.
