Help With Value of Vintage Bicycle...?

    Hey guys,

    An older friend who's not the most tech-savvy guy around asked me if I could help him determine a value of (and I guess sell) a vintage bicycle he's got.

    If anyone can help me figure the value out, it'd be much appreciated!

    Here are the particulars:

    1964 Custom Hand-built Ellis-Briggs 10-Speed Professional Road Racing Bike

    Original owner.

    21.5” frame
    Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing
    Beautiful lug work at joints
    Very complete but needs (easy) restoration (some surface rust on components)
    New Continental sew-up tubular tires + New Continental spare
    Cinelli stem and bars
    All Campagnolo (front chainring 52/42, rear cassette 22/14)
    Aluminum wheels
    Campagnolo pedals with clips & straps
    Fizik saddle
    Includes original Campagnolo tire pump

    A few years ago I sold a similiar vintage bianchi with similiar grade equipment (less the rust) and I recall around $175~200.

    I could be WAY off and some one got a great deal but I was happy it's moved on.

    Vintage bicycles really don't bring much money. Unless of course they have a competition history of note.

    You have to get way more vintage or have some pedigree attached to it to be worth anything.

    I think 150-200 is highly overvalued. It's more like 50 bucks. Maybe.

    You'd be better off parting it out, cleaning/restoring the frame and components and selling it that way.

    Sorry man, the "vintage" bike market like most others took a shit and never recovered.

    Look at completed-sold auctions on ebay for similar bikes.

    Offhand, for collector types, I think the big problem with that bike would be the rust, condition is everything. Also the saddle isn't original, so that would be a problem for a collector as well. As for a bike to ride, it would be very nice and a much nicer ride than anything that could be purchased new for two or three hundred or even double that.
    If I needed another vintage 531 DB frame bike, and it were my size, at first blush, I'd have no problem with spending 200-300 for it. But I've not had a reason to go shopping.
    As noted, it could be worth more for the components. The big problem with bikes of that vintage as riders is that the rear dropouts are too narrow for modern running gear. Nothing particularly wrong with just 10 speeds and friction shifting, but more gears are nice.

    break it down and sell it as parts.. you will get twice what you would for the whole bike.. some hipster will pay $100-300 for the frame to turn into a fixie..maybe. The components in good condition would have brought more than the frame,, but that rust kills them... might get $75-$150 for that rear derailleur on ebay... anyway... part it out. The crankset looks to be in good condition..that might bring the most money.

    Thanks for the tips, all. I put a thread up on BikeForum and also contacted the Recycled Cycles folks. I'll update the thread with the final result if we get some answers and he decides to sell it.

    Sell it to some hipster for $300.

    10+ years ago I had a few old roadies of late 60s early 70s vintage (Bianchi, Peugot, Raleigh) and couldn't GIVE those away ended up tossin' 'em in the scrap steel heap at the dump.

    that looks like a 400.00 dollar bike to me,
    Might be worth looking for some original decals for the frame as well as the Reynolds 531 stickers
    Its top of the line Campy parts,
    ditch the seat for a Brooks saddle,
    clean the rust with naval jelly ,
    spray it all down with WD40 and your good to go.

    Though if you really wanted to you could send off all the rusted parts to be re chromed,
    the aluminum parts will buff to a shine with some elbow grease

    I have a 76 Raleigh Competition 25in frame with Reynolds 531 and after looking at vintage bike forums,
    seems these are still very sought after bikes along with the components

    I dont think it is a 1964. the bolt circle on that crank is 144, which means the smallest ring it could take is a 42. In the 60's, the bolt circle was 151, the inner ring could only be a 44 as smallest.

    also, the rear derailluer has a stamp on it that says 72, that's the manufacture year. Yes, you could put newer parts on older frames, but when you look at the fork crown, which is an internal sloping Cinelli, I believe, it is more likely an early 70's bike. The flat qr's on the Campy brakes make them a bit more valuable, and they look to be standard reach, 47-57 mm.

    Definitely get your info from Bikeforums. Those guys know bikes. The guys on here saying it's not worth much, don't know anything about Vintage bikes.

    I'm with Mrmerlin on this, closer to $400. I don't know road bikes though.

    I will say that you need to watch out for people telling you what something is worth on the net. I put a vintage skateboard up asking the same thing and everyone told me it was worth less than 50 dollars. I didn't just sell it for 50 bucks. I kept it and took it to a skate board place locally, they told me it was worth at least 400 and bought it for 300.

    the only limiting thing would be the frame size as it will only fit a smaller rider,
    so anyone over 5'5" will usually need a 23in or taller frame.

    Still a valuable bike with great components,
    and a little cleaning will have things put right,
    Add some stickers for the frame ,
    and get a period correct Brooks saddle,

    This. I am trying to remember when Campy went from steel to alloy cranks but I want to say that if it was built in 1964 that it would have steel cranks.

    Likewise with the Campy side pull brakes. I got mine in about 1974 and they were hot and new then.

    And I am not familiar with the builder. British? American?

    Like the folks said, you need to watch eBay values. Some mid-80's bikes are worth some money but how can I say this delicately ... Unless you find fans of the builder, or it has a pedigree, then it's worth $200 to $600 IMHO.
