So blackbirdzach gets this neat idea to meet in Highlands, NC for Sunday BBQ lunch.

Sunday morning, leaving out about 0800.

knybanjo (Kevin) and I met at 8:30AM in Saluda NC to begin the ride. We met at Green River BBQ, the undisputed KING of BBQ joints in western NC. :D

From Saluda, down through the Greenville watershed to SC Hwy 11, and a brief stop at this little waterfall:

Stopping at an overlook at Lake Jocassee:

Hwy 11 to 130, to 107, to Bull Pen Road to Highlands. For the most part, nice twisty pavement and dirt roads.

I forgot to take obligatory pics of the lunch, but from all indications, everyone was very pleased. :1drink

After lunch, banjo and I headed back the way we came towards the Horsepasture area of SC, near Lake Jocassee.

Along the way, we stopped at this cool little post office in Grimshawes, NC.

Sign reads, "Smallest U.S. Post Office occupied this building 1903 to 1953."

A stop at Jumping Off Rock above Lake Jocassee.

I wish I had some pics of the great trails around Horsepasture, but you probably couldn't see anything for the dust. One trail (with NICE berms and whoops and such) leads down to this boat landing on Jocassee. For the life of me, I don't know how you'd tow anything much more than a small jonboat down that road.....

Kevin says, "whew, it sure is hot but it's ok cause I'm standing in this cool mountain lake."

A great Sunday ride! Nice to meet all the ADV'ers for lunch in Highlands and a great day riding with knybanjo. :D

EDIT: Hey banjo, I forgot to tell you this, but I almost got taken out by a wild turkey on Pinnacle Mtn. Road. You flushed him up and when I came by, he flew right over me at helmet level!!! Yikes!

It was a beautiful day for ridin'!!!:ricky :thumb :thumb Almost a bit too warm at times.......I need to get some new mesh pants.:deal With the weather so nice I'm not sure why we couldn't gather up a few more riders from the Carolina side (the GA riders showed up in force!) but it turned out to be plenty dusty enough as it was anyway I guess.:scratch
The horse crowd was up early Sun morn getting ready for some steeple chase action in Tryon.

I even tossed in a bit of dirt on my way to meet Sportster Girl.

We played in the water some along the way.

Here's my shot of the Post Office with an awesome cliff face in the background......this was just east of Highlands.
We learned that the KEY to riding Horsepastures at Lake Jocassee is to go in the weeks just before the gates close........not right after they re-open as they just had.......it was a freshly graded roly-poly mess, a dusty one at that. None the less the spur that goes past Jumping Off Rock and decends down to the lake still remains in it's "unimproved" state.:thumb
Some views from the cliff top of jumping off rock.

Down at the water front it really hit me just how low the water was when I was here in Dec....those boat ramps were real long.........

We spent the rest of the afternoon zig zagging on and off of pavement....up 178 thru Rossman 215 up to Balsam Grove FRs to the east back down to 276 then over Pinnacle Mtn where we said goodbye for the day and I made my way back to Saluda and hit 176 south to Tryon for one more dose of twisties.:thumb That's about the time darkness caught me and I just slabbed it home.....375 mi for the day....not too many when you consider I was away from home 14 hrs:lol3 stupid roly-poly gravel:ddog

Hope to ride with ya again soon!!:thumb :thumb :ricky

Looks like a great weekend. I usually ride those areas when I'm home, but alas, I wasn't around this weekend. Maybe I can join in sometime in May or June.

Kapn, you're more than welcome! I'm from Holly Springs, just down the road from Long Creek.

I was down in your neck of the woods a few weekends ago. This is off Damascus Church Rd..... :D

That mud makes me want a more dirt oriented bike.

I actually travel for work, but keep my bike at my parent's house just south of Westminster down in Foxwood Hills. I usually ride around the Longcreek area, but found Sarah's Creek road over off of Warwoman Road near Clayton a few months ago. It's a NFS road with 5 water crossings!

    Gearing up to ride...
...my Mom lives down there in Sapphire, and while I've seen most of the places you posted from frequent visits, it was mostly from a car. I am so delighted to know that trails connect a lot of those places and you can get dirty there!

I am headed to NC next week as a matter of fact (via NY, OH, IN, and KY) on a sport tourer and will think of y'all when I open it up on those fantastic roads 64, 11, 130 and 107. (My post will be something like a girl, a borrowed bike, and a posse of sportbike riders...)

    Thanks for posting.
