The L models make nice custom bikes. They're not a total loss, if you can weld and grind and have some manual skills.
I got to test ride an old GS1000. The owner had dressed it up to look like that limited edition one with the blue and white paint job and the small sports fairing. He had supped it up pretty good too. The GS1000 had a big following. The magazine testers all loved it too.
I never heard anything negative about the Suzuki shaft drives....except for the M50's. They are having problems with them not being lubed from the factory. It can get very expensive to repair. Yamaha has had a few problems with the V Star shaft drive models leaving the factory with not enough grease too. This from owners forums.
In the right hands, they were, and still are, faster. Then again, I may be playing favorites... I bleed Honda red!
Don't forget the Honda was down 100 cc on the Zook... red rules!
