Could anybody give me some insight on the differences between the two. I know the Honda has the 6spd, and a slightly smaller motor, but that's about all I know.

Are there any notable differences between the two that an interested buyer should know?

Edit: I guess it'd be smart to add the Kawasaki Sherpa to the mix, huh?

The Honda has the widest gear spread of any current dual sport, which allows it to share a nice low first gear ratio with the Yamaha and still have a little taller gear on top for the road. The Kawasaki Sherpa has a nice wide six-speed gear spread as well, and it comes geared slightly taller. The Yamaha's five speed has a very nice spread, but the gap between gears is larger as a result.

If I were buying mainly as an off road bike for a newer rider I might lean toward the Honda. If I wanted cheap transportation with some dirt use I'd take a harder look at the Sherpa. I think these bikes are close enough in performance that you could choose based on how they look to you or your preference of dealers and not be sorry.

That's the two bikes I was looking at also this spring. In the end, I choose the Yamaha XT250 'cause I found a great deal on a new '08.

Overall, they rode about the same. I liked the Honda's 6 speed on the pavement, but preferred the Yamaha's 5 speed in the dirt. The Honda's speedometer cluster was old and clunky looking compared to the Yamaha's digital. I also liked the online info for the XT available at xt250report.com

Both are good bikes and you won't go wrong with either. If you are a bit taller, look at the Kaw KLX250 also.

    Hope that helps some...

Even though I'm 6' tall, I was "blessed" with stubby 30 inseam. That is a big part for not looking at taller bikes.

In the end, that was why I choose my 230L: Friendly dealer.

I was ready to buy the XT ... came to the dealer for that purpose, and the sales guy totally squashed my desire to purchase anything from him.

I ride a 230L. For one, I liked the look better, the Yamaha front fender is retarded looking (my opinion of course). Also I could not find a Yamaha to sit on. I think the Sherpa was not out yet. I also thing it will be easier modify Hondas (Engine basically the same as the 230F). So many out there. I have already but CRF150R inverted forks on my bike.
