Over in another area (Riding > Upcoming) geode has created a thread called "The Tent Space List ..."
    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149585
(Edit: Now in Trip Planning, but link works)

A great idea :thumb and it got me to thinking about recommendations for hotels in Mexico and Central America. I would be glad to coordinate this as geode has done for the tent space list.

(Craneguy has started to work on a Google map showing the locations of all the accommodations listed in this thread. Here's the link: Hotels in Mexico and LA Thanks, Steve! :thumb)

Here is the information that seems most desirable: (Items 1-4 are the least I'd like to get your input on. The rest would be nice to have)

First I'll just list the info so you can cut & paste into your post (thanks, Teeds):
    1. State
    2. City
    3. Hotel Name
    4. Address/directions/coordinates
    5. Rating
    6. Comments on Location
    7. Rate
    8. Secure Parking?
    9. Hot water
    10. AC
    11. Fans
    12. Service/Language Spoken
    13. Overall impression
    14. Date of Visit
    15. Website of Hotel
    16. URL for your trip report

Now, here are the items with a short explanation of what kind of info you could furnish:
    1. State
    2. City
    3. Hotel Name
    4. Address/directions/coordinates
    5. Rating - Based on your overall impression how would you rate this hotel on a 1-5 scale. Let's say a "3" rating would be AVERAGE. This is a completely subjective rating based on YOUR experience.
    6. Comments on location - City and state are important but also what the area around the hotel is like. Does it sit all alone on the beach or is it near the zocalo? Is it within walking distance of good restaurants and bars? If you like to have a cold beer or 2 at the end of the day and prefer not to have to ride to get it. Proximity to other businesses that one might need/want the sevices of while on the road such as internet cafe, laundry, etc.
    7. Rate (specifiy dollars or pesos and single/double/triple, etc.)
    8. Secure Parking? - Foyer? Lobby? Garage? Courtyard? Comments?
    9. Hot water - Y/N, comments
    10. AC - Y/N, comments
    11. Fans - Y/N, comments
    12. Service - What was their attitude towards riders? Does the staff speak English? Did they make you feel at home? Did you feel welcome and appreciated?
    13. Overall impression - The less you spend on hotels per night, the longer you can stay on the road. That being said, I am willing to spend more for a hotel that puts me close to an area I want to be. (see Comments on Location). I am looking for a clean room and a hot shower at the end of the day. Don't really want/need a lot of other frills but other's opinions may vary.
    14. Date of Visit
    15. Website of hotel
    16. URL for your trip report -- you did do one, didn't you :deal.

I will try to keep the thread updated like geode has done on the tent space list.

    LATEST UPDATE: June 1, 2010

Looks like this is a go and thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. I've tried to incorporate them as much as possible and I'm still open to more comments as this is an ongoing endeavor.

Here's the list so far. The list shows just the basics; please click on the link to get more detailed info. I'll try and keep them alphabetically by Country (after Mexico), State, then City.

EDIT: Here is a new version which makes it easier for me. I've combined the Hotel and Link columns into one called Hotel/Link. Just click on the hotel name and the appropriate entry will come up. The old version is at the end of this but, unless an overwhelming demand convinces me otherwise, I'll only update this version.

Once the GPS forum was an idiot's idea...they laughed...scoffed even..then put it up once they realized GPS was kewl.. Course they thought Scooters were kewl too... Hell in a handbasket I tell'ya, and they just keep hiring more of these crackpot Mods around here...:D

Regardless though, Mex and SA Hotels with locations, prices, ratings and little notes (see X right around the corner, next to that other thing Y. She's got big bewbies) are a great idea. Additional bonus if GPS coordinates are included...even attach a waypoint .GPX file to the post...

    Great Idea!
We might even get better treatment/rates if the hotels wanted to get on our list. At least we stand less of a chance of getting ripped off ....twice.
    Cost
    Secure parking
    Hot water
    AC
    Location
    Food
And it would sure save us a lot of time searching threads to find a place.

And Kenny; aren't you supposed to be at work?

    Good ideas on the info.

Work :eek1??? Now that's a 4-letter word for an old retired fart if I've ever heard one :slurp.

Looks like there's some interest so I'll get to work on it in the next day or two. After all, I've got a lot of "work" to do :ricky.

Of course. Last I checked Baja was still part of Mexico.
Maybe two categories: one for camping/palapas, one for hotels.

Everybody has their own ideas as to what makes a good Hotel.

For me the things that mean the most (for the most part in this order) are:

    Name: fairly straight-forward and obvious.

Location: city and state is important but I also want to know what the area around the hotel is like. Does it sit all alone on the beach or is it near the zocalo? Is it within walking distance of good restaurants and bars? I like to have a cold beer or 2 at the end of the day and prefer not to have to ride to get it. Proximity to other businesses that one might need/want the sevices of while on the road such as internet cafe, laundry, etc.

Cost: I figure the less I spend on hotels per night, the longer I can stay on the road. That being said, I am willing to spend more for a hotel that puts me close to an area I want to be. (see Location). I am looking for a clean room and a hot shower at the end of the day. Don't really want/need a lot of other frills but other's opinions may vary.

Service: What is their attitude toward riders? Secure parking? In the lobby/foyer/garage? Availability from the staff of info on local restaurants, bars, and other attractions. Did the staff make your stay more enjoyable? Did you feel welcome and appreciated?

Value/rating: Based on what you feel you received for the amount of $$$ you paid.

Directions: Clear, concise directions to the hotel. Coordinates a definite bonus.

Comments: Any other comments about said hotel including pictures, general cleanliness, other ammenities, etc.

As I mentioned before, I think this is a really great idea and would be happy to offer up my thoughts/opinions on places I have stayed. I am sure many others would also be more than willing to provide info.

    Kenny

I stayed there in 2005. I rolled the GS into the small court yard.
The room was big and reasonable clean. There was hot water but no toilet seat (I never use 'em anyway)
The grandmother that owns the place was helpful and a joy to talk to.

    5. Comments on location - Located at Madero #50 less than 1 block from the zocalo. Execellent restaurant and bar on premises with open air patio seating.

Within easy walking distance of Los Equipales Restaurant and El Candil Bar (Fantastic Margaritas). Great little Karaoke Bar just opened up before you get to the zocalo. ). Also laundry nearby and internet cafe across the street form the Karaoke bar.

    7. Secure Parking? - Allowed to park bikes in courtyard.
    8. Hot water - Yes
    9. AC - Yes
    10. Service - Owner Javier, a Mulege native speaks English. Very helpful.
    11. Overall impression - Excellent value for the money, very convenient to downtown, small 8 room hotel, clean basic rooms. I will definitely stay there again.

    This is sooooo timely ...

Let me collect my thought and I will post up two offerings.

    As an aside ...

Put at the top of post number on the information in the order you want w/o the attached comments, so we can cut-in-paste into our posts for formatting. It doesn't hurt for us to be a bit organized in the way we post the data so it will be easy to get into the front of the thread.

    1. State
    2. City
    3. Hotel Name
    4. Rating
    5. Comments on location
    6. Room type and rate
    7. Secure Parking?/Where
    8. Hot water
    9. AC
    10. Service/Languages spoken
    11. Overall impression

Another thought would be link the post url to the name ... easier to go locate specific posts when this grows to the level it hopefully will.

Not trying to be a PITA, only make this thread as valuable as possible

    2. City: Creel
    3. Hotel Name: Margarita's
    4. Rating: 4 stars
    5. Comments on location: Just east of the main tourist area on a quiet sidestreet.
    6. Room type and rate: Double/Double - 500 Pesos per night for the room for two people, which included breakfast and supper.
    7. Secure Parking/Where: Sorta since the remodel. We locked our bikes together in front of the lobby on the street. The lobby is manned 24 hours a day.
    8. Hot water: Yes, hot and the shower was comfortably large.
    9. AC: I don't remember seeing a unit, but we were there in the winter and the rooms are heated. I have heard that Creel is comfortable even in the summer w/o AC.
    10. Service/Languages spoken: The service was excellent. The majority of the people there only speak Spanish, but Cezar speaks English very well.
    11. Overall impression: This is a very nice place to stay and is a very good value.
    12. Website: http://hotelesmargaritas.tripod.com/
    13. Comments: Cezar took time out of his routine to to take Skinny and I to Presidio with broken bikes and broken bodies. He was invaluable to others in our party regarding spots to visit. He rides and therefore understands what we want to see.
