    Personally I would be a bit wary of the Thuraya system. When I busted my collarbone on the Davies Plain Track a fellow traveller had a Thuraya but he could not get a signal good enough to make a call, but he could text. My Spot came to the rescue. He also said he couldn't ring 000 or 112, if you wanted to ring the ambos in Oz, you had to know the directory number here to ring them. Maybe they have fixed that little problem, it was a few years ago, but in my opinion if you can't ring 000 it defeats the purpose.

    I have a Thuraya and its been great on our outback trips. You do have to have line of sight to the northern horizon as the satellite is above singapore. Once it locks on there are no dropouts, unlike iridium that can lose satellites as they pass overhead.
    Maybe hilly country iridium is the go, anywhere else I'd recommend Thuraya. Its also much cheaper.
