Great ride report! I respect that fact that you knew your limits and chose to wisely stop. In 1968 my cousin rode a 1966 Triumph Bonneville with apehangers from San Diego to Northwest Arkansas in a little less then 24 hours. He was stationed in San Diego with the Navy, but had a hot girlfriend in Arkansas as motivation! He did this same trip several times during the course of the romance with this young lady. They broke up and he married someone else. He sold me the Triumph in 1978 at the urging of his new wife. Apparently he told the ride story too many times for her comfort and when she looked at the bike it reminded her of the girlfriend.

    One month followup:

Two weeks after I returned I was hospitalized and immediately scheduled to have my gallbladder removed. Not a big deal as they do those all the time. I knew it was bad after having had an attack in early 2015 but this time was much worse.

When they got in there they found my gallbladder was gangrenous and on the verge of rupturing. The doctors said we were probably hours away from going from bad to much worse.

The surgeon also said the gangrene had probably been there for a month or two (not caused by the trip) and probably explained the weird fever I experienced on that first night of the Iron Butt (and a few times since). It was probably also why I fatigued faster than I expected. This doesn't explain my poor planning which was the main reason I didn't complete the 50cc in time.

I have a picture of the gallbladder but I will spare you all that. It's pretty knarly though.

Anyhow, the lesson to be learned is to stay on top of that sort of thing! I knew I should have had it out in 2015 but didn't. I'm just glad it waited 2 weeks to go kaput instead of somewhere in West Texas where I might not have been close to good help.

Nice job on the report. I've been back and forth on the fence regarding doing an Iron Butt ride, or not.

Your report put me on the "do it" side of the fence.

Nice RR, brings back memories, like the time I cried under my helmet in 30 mph crosswinds in SD. I wouldn't trade that trip for anything though.

Yes! You absolutely should! I would suggest to just pick a date and make it happen. I know I talked about it forever but when I put it on the calendar it became real.

Great report, & Great to see that GS It looks identical to the one I traded in for my new one in Chattanooga. I'am sure from the pic's that's it, that is a great bike and I still miss it.............

It very well could be the same one! I loved it. It had about 26k on the odo when I left out of ATL. I wouldn't mind making it mine if they were asking so much for it (they're moving it out of the rental fleet now), oh, and that little thing about having 4 small kids now...

I'm really glad you made health a priority. Not getting the gallbladder out was the right decision at the time, but it caused more damage & you paid attention to your body - before it was too late.

I got a staph infection that spread to my upper thigh - about 1/3 of my leg. I kept feeling like I had a low fever and went back to the doc that gave me cortizone for a bad case of eczema. The guy's eyes were gigantic when he thumped my hardwood leg. He moved faster than any doctor I've ever seen. After he got a shot in me and stopped looking panicked he started to upbraid me for not coming in sooner. He said I was a couple hours from dying. :yikes

And a couple years later, a buddy of mine died from a staph infection he ignored. When he finally felt sick enough to go to his doctor, his body was overrun and he died a few hours after going to the ER. :waysad

Have fun with the 4th child, you'll probably notice a pattern in parenting pretty soon. Repetition tends to improve one's parenting skills. :nod

I look forward to reading your RRs when you return to riding in a few years (it'll go quicker than you think!)

Enjoyed the report and am very glad the health situation is addressed. That's sort of important. :)

Great ride report. I've done several Iron Butts and it is really a mental thing. I have at times kept riding when I shouldn't have. You made a good choice.
BTW- The fever during your trip was probably cholecystitis rather than gangrene. You would definitely not have lasted 2 weeks with a gangrenous gallbladder. Maybe a day.

Loved every sentence of this report. Just one thing to be clear on...

A lot of people can ride Coast to coast. But no one else can be a dad to your kids. Rides never effect anyone for the long term. Your parenting will effect generations that will outlive any iron butter.
