    It took about 4 hours to do all of the panels and it was a pain in the ass.

    I used three different colors of vinyl to make the pattern. I got the vinyl from Metro-restyling for about $25.

    Just make sure they're really clean. I guess you can use a primer if you have time, but I do about 5-6 light coats, letting it dry completely between. The great thing about using rattle can paint is that its an easy fix for when they get scratched. Plus, the longer that paint stays on there, the harder it gets.

    I've heard horror stories about powder coating wheels... not only is it expensive and time consuming, but it affects the integrity of your wheel. The heating process can make the wheel more prone to getting bent. And it doesn't matter what you coat your wheel with, its going to get scratched. I would rather be able to fix/repaint it myself in a few minutes at home than have to drive a few hours to get it powder coated again and pay money.

    Yes, I'm 6'2". But possibly I crouch the tank more than others? I also do a good portion of my riding standing up.

    Got out for a little civilized camping this weekend…..down in the Devil's Den of Arkansas.

    I used my new "secret weapon" to keep the neighbors at bay: my portable (small…but loud) boom-box with the most obnoxious rap music I could find. Its a long story…..schemed it up one trip while camping with Texas Monty. I vowed that would be the last time I ever have somebody setup right next to me and play their music and be loud all night. The straw broke the camel's back, as they say. And, I decided to fight back…..with more offensive measures!

    This was my first test of "Camp Neighbor Repellant". When people got close to eyeballing the spots near me, I just hit PLAY, and let it blare. Kind of surprised it worked so well.

    Logged about 400 miles of riding, with lots of nice river roads.

    This windshield setup worked very well. Finally, I have found a combination that I'm happy with.

    It was my first test of my new racks for the Wolf-bags. I loaded them extra heavy to see if it affected the bike handling any. Glad to report: None…Nada…Zip. I couldn't even tell they were on the bike while riding. VERY pleased with the setup. I'm Good-to-Go!

    What a great idea with the boom box! I'll have to try that.
    I'm currently working on my racks. Got the left side done and will start on the right side later today. It sure takes a lot of time to make things like that.

    You would if you were meeting your college son, who drove a car and brought the spelunking gear, and wanted you to explore a cave with him.

    Unfortunately, the caves in the Devil's Den have all been closed due to some kind of white-nose bat fungus.....or some such thing. :cry

    Too bad, they've got some really cool caves in Devil's Den.

    Back to the Husky:

    Anyone know what type of bulb the headlight is and the little light above it? I want to replace mine but can't find the bulb type in the parts fiche.

    Yeah, I really try to avoid that too but sometimes it's necessary. For me it normally happens when I'm traveling and just need a place to crash for the night. I roll in after dark and I'm out again by 7am. It's not exactly a quality camping experience.

    I changed my oil again tonight, and got fed up with that darn dipstick of an oil cap…..what wouldn't screw on straight.

    Finally decided to properly diagnose and fix the culprit.

    Here's the problem:

    The dipstick gets a little warped and bent from heat or whatever, and it causes problems down in the hole….preventing proper alignment with the threads…..and screwing with your sanity.

    So, I simply neutered the weasel:

    The oil cap works perfectly now.

    Aligns and threads right on every time, with no fuss whatsoever.

    Its a miracle, I'm telling you. :deal


    Here's a looksee inside the hole:

    I used a flash, so the gold color you see at the very bottom is actually my oil level. Take note of the red metal just above the gold fluid. That is an inner flange or gusset of sorts. The dipstick was snagging up against this flange preventing thread alignment on top. I simply couldn't get a straight start on the thread, as the dipstick keeps rubbing against this flange. Gets worse, the more warped the dipstick becomes.

    If you're worried how on earth you'll ever "measure" your oil level, try using a graduated cylinder when filling up. Takes 2,000 cc (2.0 L) and you're essentially good to go. Or, use a flashlight and look inside the hole. My fluid in the photo is at the correct height with the bike on the sidestand. The oil level is just below that inner red metal flange.

    If that's not high tech enough for you Uber types, then make a measuring rod of your own (from a stick, clothes hanger, plastic straw, or something from Sweet Thang's makeup draw……amazing all the useful gadgets hiding in there (for bike maintenance). Measuring from the top of the metal threads (flush with entry hole) its 2" to Max level and 4" to Min level.

    That's great info HF, and I'm glad you got that figured out. I wonder if a guy could get by with just clipping off maybe 1" and leaving the high mark and part of the stem intact?
