I got the R50-6/5 and now what?

    I got the R50-6/5 (R50 with R60 jugs) and now I am at a bit of a loss as which way to turn with it.

    The bike is at a point where I can go stock and a nice rider. Or, go nuts and go after the cafe/rat bike route. Either way would be fun. Since this will be my 2011/12 winter project I am in no hurry just looking for some inspiration from fellow inmates.

    Yes the carbs leak, the mufflers are from a Sporty but the rest, besides a scraping noise when the driveshaft rotates, is fine. OK, the seat needs help to.

    Just me but I like it the way it is. It gives off a cool sophisticated look. All you are some nice leather saddlebags and you will have the hipster chicks all over you.

    Have fun with it regardless. As they say in the /5 Blacksheep club: "It's your bike, do what you want."

    No, not a member of any BMW club.

    As to the reto look, that is a option I am kicking around. I found some nice original leather bags that would work great on it. With the "retro" look I would need the black side panels (have one in black), some EMO knock-off mufflers and a seat.

    change the bars to clubman or such and get bar end mirrors. Thats all I would do. Done with the K bike?

    Tough to tell from photos, but it looks good wearing "original patina"-toasters are growing on me.

    Very curious about how those H-mufflers sound.... I have heard that they work well, and to my eye actually look pretty decent!

    'Course you might not have any "real" BMW mufflers to compare them to, but: are they reasonably quiet? ...do they bark when opened up? curious!

    I have low sport bars on mine, and bar end mirrors, and I love both. It also still looks stock to a non R60/5 Aficionado. I have stock pipes though, and it seems everywhere I stop people, even non motorcycle types ask me about the bike and love the way it looks.

    I vote for not another cafe bike and since MOST of the stock stuff is there, try to find a set of cheap aftermarket ppipes that lok stock and go from there. I kinda like the two tone paint although that was never an option on this vintage BMW.

    My vote is for sport bars, bar-end mirrors, black sidecovers, some nice leather bags and maybe an other seat.
    Please, do not turn this one into a cafe/rat bike.

    I like it the way it is, even the handlebar (which just needs to be tilted up a notch in my opinion.)
    Start riding it and adjust to your needs, don't adjust to your looks. It's just to nice to start fooling around with it.

    Fix what leaks, figure out the scraping noise, change the bars if they do not feel right to you and change the seat if it makes your ass unhappy. Then go on a trip with all the money you saved by not fixing what isn't broken.

    CurlyMike - Yes the K is finished has almost 3k added to the clock and is ready for her first road trip (Little Rock on business). Take a look at the build thread:

    As to the R50-60/5, the bars are as far forward as the can practically go without getting lower again. Chances are that I will either mount some semi-straight bars on it or I will go the clubman route.

    The pipes, although the look rather nice, will be replace with EMGO knock-offs - as to the sound, they sound rather nice; not loud and no bark. Unless I go the cafe way then I will try to find some two into one pipes.

    The carbs, well they do mark their territory. Not bad, but they do mark. Had them open and their time has come for a rebuild. The cables are way past their prime.

    I went back and re-read some of the ideas and the low bar, bar ends, new pipes and seat (it is to soft and moves) does seem the way to go. The bike is almost all there so what the heck - keep it as a moded stocker and have fun. The drive line will need a good going over but that is not rocket science (have the skirt lifted on my R1150GS for a spline lube as I write this)

    Keep the ideas coming, I love it!

    What bars are that? Looking at your seat I know that mine will be replaced! The one thing I almost did not mention was the suspension. Mine is just worn out. The upgrade will be easy - YSS shocks and Works springs in the front; worked very well for my K75S.

    the bars say "Fehling" (european low bars) bought them from Huckeys. I just put progressive springs in the front, saving up for works shocks!

    I had very good luck with the YSS on my K75S. The price difference is almost twice for the works. The YSS is not top of the line but it will last longer than any stock unit and perform just as good as the works; unless you go for totally adjustable Works units. Just my 0.01 worth.

    Please... No more cafe race Airheads. That bikes too nice to strip!

    I'd change a few things but keep it mostly stock.

    "S" Bars
    A stock seat with a repro/stock cover. (I have a good one if you need it!)
    Bar End mirrors
    Rear sets
    Fresh suspenders
    Vintage Leather or glass bags would be nice.

    Leave the rest alone but clean the bike up and get it running perfectly. The stock seats are pretty firm but very comfortable unless the foams beat to Hell. I always liked mine and after all these years, I still do.

    I like that bike!


    Yeah, I'd probably even leave the Sporty mufflers on it but don't screw it up. Thats a neat little bike! :D
