For several years I have wanted to try a ride I'll call the "White Rim Sandwich with Kokopelli Bread".

This is a one day ride starting in Rabbit Valley and doing the Kokopelli Trail with no shortcuts to Moab then running the White Rim Trail and then back to Rabbit Valley on the Kokopelli all in one day's ride. If all goes well this should be about an 18 hour 450 mile ride. If all goes well, and it rarely does.

Three very good friends, the kind who help you hide the body, took some convincing to buy into this ride.

    "that doesn't sound fun"

    "why"

"is there something wrong with you"

were typical pre-ride comments. I just hope they still talk to me after this one.

Because after 17 hours, the side of the road was more comfortable than my bed at home.

    Tha Rick in full snore.

More later, I'm going to bed....

Maybe they can post there exact time, size of team, photos and route of their ride. Then we can try to do it faster and make a race of it.

We can rename it the Koko-Rimjob Canonball Run?:nod

Toddler didn't like tha stickers in tha sand, so he opted for a nap on tha "softest friggin rock there is". I think Xplor might have a pic of his nap time bed.

Great ride. Kinda reminded me of tha MOAR ride put on by hellsickle.

Looking forward to Toddler's RR. :lurk Innazone and Xplor should chime in with their accounts as well.

Some things I learned this ride: A big meal is not so good when going out for tha rest of tha ride, Fruits and simple foods are good energy, I can "hit tha wall" and push through it only 4 times before my brian turns to mush.

People look at me funny when I'm cramped out in front of tha City Market in Moab.

Toddler's dream was to drive out to Rabbit Valley friday eve, get up sorta early and start tha Koko, arrive around 12-1 for lunch in Moab, then hit tha White rim trail, have dinner in Moab, then hit tha Koko on tha way back to Rabbit valley.

A few thoughts went through our head on tha Koko:

We have to do Rose garden uphill, in tha dark, and tired after about 350 miles without any real breaks? There was a Jeep rally of some sort there, my estimate 30+ jeeps to go around.

I got directionally challenged for about 1 hour near Dewey bridge.

Tha white rim was prety uneventfull, but did have some mishaps of a chain guide malfunction, a yeti coming too close to heat exhaustion and heaving his tortilli lunch in his new helmet.

Toddler had equipment issues that needed to be sorted out.

And it was about 1 in tha morning, pretty tired and a LONG way from tha truck, so we took a nap on tha Rim trail exit near Potash.

    More to come...:deal

    I wish I took some pic's.

XPLOR is the first to wake as usual and has us on bikes and moving at 7:11am.

All was going well until Tha Rick takes a wrong turn just after crossing hwy-128 and restarting the dirt again.
He missed the left onto the kokopelli trail. XPLOR thought we all knew the way and so he didn't wait at the intersections.
Tha Rick was wanting to chew some miles so it took him an hour to get back. He thought he was trying to catch XPLOR.
Inazone and I waited, rested and laughed.

    More trail pictures.

We got to the Rose Garden and it was a traffic jam, about 8 jeeps coming up, bikes going down and a gaggle of jeeps at the bottom.
I saw a new Husaberg 570, the guy was from Las Vegas, he was going down as well. Cool Bike. He likes it.

We run into 10's of mountain bikers on the uphill road section into the La Salles.
They are all over the road, you try to pass friendly and keep the dust down, but you have to weave through them like pylons as they don't ride single file.
I felt bad at first, but they could do something to mitigate the situation by riding single file to the right.

We hit the pavement and I can't help myself and rail fast and hard in the twisties. Coming around one corner I see my first bobcat.
I haul down on the brakes and it just watches me and slowly scampers across my path to the other side of the road and up into the woods.
    Cool!

We ran into an internet group with riders from all over. I think it was KLR forum???

Due to Tha Rick's extra riding earlier he runs out of gas and borrows some from XPLOR.

We hit Moab, Eat a great carbo meal at Pasta Jay's and resupply for stage 2.

We headed along Potash Road and then up Pucker Pass then pavement then to Mineral Bottoms and the start of the White Rim Trail when run counter-clockwise. Energy levels were good. It is now mid-afternoon.

Inazone is feeling sick to his stomach, his lunch is not sitting well and the heat is getting to him. He wisely takes it easy.

Inazone is a White Rim virgin. Too bad, he won't have much time for the views.

I remember an experienced rider telling me one time, as we got passed really aggressively by another rider, "He must have to take a shit". I always thought that was funny.

Well for some reason I was really flying and visions of a top notch middle of the desert pooper station up ahead were part of that reason. With the pooper station surrounded by hords of mountain bikers getting ready to camp for the night, I did us dirt bikers proud. With little time to lay down and rest in the shadow of my bike, the gang showed up. Never underestimate the motivational power of a bowel movement. Enough said.

We get to Murphy's hogback and Inazone takes a break.

Two mountain biking chicks give him a little grief for being tired and not having to pedal. They were taking 4 days to ride the White Rim. It was only proper for us to make fun of Inazone as well.

We need to make time, so the next stretch we boogy. Inazone is feeling better and the temperature is perfect. What a great time to be riding. I love this stuff.

Inazone gets stuck in a rut and it causes his chain to derail from the sprocket. Oh no! He fixes it, but more time is lost. Damn BMW's with chains, that is just wrong!

The sun has set, but we have residual light. It is beautiful out. We get to the intersection of Schafer Trail and the road that takes you to the Potash plant. A deer ran in front of me. It was not even close.

I eat the two best oranges of my life. Our light is now gone.

Tha Rick needs a copilot as his headlight is KTM lame. XPLOR escorts him until Tha Rick runs out of gas. We transfer fuel from XPLOR to Tha Rick.

Turns out he didn't run out of gas, he was just going on reserve. We aren't thinking real well at this point. Whoohoo!

I provide escort for Tha Rick into Moab. We resupply and talk about our options.

So do you think we will finish this sandwich?

I contemplated doing a video to get the sound. Three people snoring all at once and me awake.

Tha Rick and Inazone both snore like hardened beer drinking men, XPLOR snores like a man who drinks peach flavored umbrella drinks. It's hard to explain.

I thought of kookoo for koko, but couldn't come up with something with White Rim in it that I liked. Wish I had thought of the rim job angle. I like the way you think.:freaky
