    Specifically, in a range of years simultaneously. Why? So I don't need to ask questions like:

    IF one had all the parts, could the later-style airbox be retrofitted to the engine/gearbox of a late-70's? As I recall, the measurements of the gearboxes and engine blocks are the same, but I'm thinking the starter cover wouldn't line up properly.

    To clarify, what're the odds of being able to replace this:

    I have had 31 BMWs over the years. Mostly airheads, and R80G/S ridden where I logged most miles.

    At one point, I had 13. It seemed like I was always buying tires, tuning up, or something was necessary. I ended up putting clipboards on the seats so I could log when each was last ridden, etc. Too many.

    Presently 6 bikes and some sometimes a scooter. Just right. ;)

    I suspect one would have to swap for the newer style cover, which should be a non issue if everything else fits well.

    I could say i have too many. Tires and batteries become an issue. Sometimes I think I want to sell some off but the cash reward never equals the loss. There is always that empty feeling when you can actually see exposed floor in the garage.

    I think it will work with the later starter cover as well. Then there is the crank breather setup to consider. I run my through the square airbox and out the water drain hole and then up around my rear fender and out the back by the license plate . It's about the cleanest setup I have seen IMHO. I wish I had a photo of it to post. One of the tricks to my setup is that 3/8ths automotive fuel line fits perfectly inside of the stock crankcase breather hose that goes to the box. With a bit of silicone on the outside of the auto line stuck up in there it leaks no oil there whatsoever for about 150,000 miles. With a properly maintained K+N filter and all the crankcase breather oil going to the outside, my box and snorkels stay almost perfectly spotless. No crap, no dust, not even any oil. Let me warn you that that will just about never happen with the stock paper filters.

    I like the square airboxes. They are a lot easier to maintain IMO and I think they help midrange a lot at very little top end expense.

    i just checked an 85 starter cover against 78 and 79 ones, the 85 one looks to be a tiny bit shorter than the two clam shell types, only by a milimetre or two if at all though

    only difference i can see is the hump on the older ones to match the clam shell, might look a bit odd with the newer airbox

    looks to me like it will fit but the newer low cover would probably look better

    Thanks, guys. I think the later boxes are an improvement as well - certainly easier to get into and it saves wear and tear on the intake tubes over time.

    I don't think the original starter cover even shortened would allow you to run the square airboxes horns and I highly recommend running the horns with the square airbox. I prefer the one small and large horn setup over the two large on my bike even after I have tuned it with a sport cam, Dell's, port work. etc..

    With just a little doctoring on the square airbox cover snorkels you can get them to fit almost perfectly and leave them. Something they rarely ever do on most beemers out there. You can file almost half of the velocity stack threads off Dellorto's and the stock square airbox snorkels fit perfectly right on Dell's just like a 32mm Bing with JUST a hose clamp for a much cleaner setup IMO over running a radiator hose there and two clamps.

    79 only starter cover. I like the look of the early starter cover but it is a 2 horse power loss.

    don't mean to hijack the thread but how does the starter cover cover take away 2hp?

    i only ask because i was going to put either my 78 clam shell and cover on ebay or my 79 setup, just cant decide which one i like best, cast in scoop or rubber scoop

    a hp loss would make my mind up pretty quick

    It makes sense if you look at the airflow... The later intake and filter doesn't force the air to change directions as often.

    It's the air box that takes away HP not the starter cover. The 79 is the cooler looking starter cover.

    The '79 also has the larger opening, compared to the rubber ones.
