We had been hemming and hawing for months regarding our Bend Dual Sport annual spring shindig. With some real major rides coming up in June I figured this would be a good time to flog the XRR and its corresponding new, elusive WHITE Giant Loop Coyote bag for a quick overnighter to Summer Lake Hot Springs to test out the camping gear. FOURTEEN others had similar ideas! IT. IS. ON!

Two groups of seven...group 1, left at about 9:45...

Yes, EVERYONE had a Giant Loop bag! Crazy!

Then down the powerline towards Derrick Cave...

We got into Christmas Valley to fuel the bodies and the bikes. Apparently the service was a little slow at the Lodge for Group 1 because they were still there eating when we pulled into the Chevron. Now we are a group of 14... but wait! What's this??

OregonMLD's Katoom apparently has an aversion to green fluid, mainly of the coolant type. He decides that to push this issue would not be a good idea, especially with where we are headed, and opts for slabbage back to Bend.

Here's where things get kinda interesting...

I had to work saturday and couldn't get it together to ride the dirt with these fellas so I loaded up the 950 and slabbed the 130 miles with Park on his nice Vee Strom. We left the south end of town about 2:20 pm.

It was a fairly brisk pace pace and temperature but what was amazing was everyone arrived in Paisley within 30 minutes of each other. Couldn't have planned that any better.

Big pack of wild Coyotes -

Even the 2-up group arrived right on time - Bravo :clap

After dinner we headed up to the spring where this aquatic creature was captured.

    Ahhhh the healing waters.

SOme late night heckling garnered the expected responses.

Usually when we head southeast from Christmas Valley we simply slab down the road and turn up Fandango Canyon. Well I bumped into a guy at the Chevron who told us of a different, potentially more interesting route into Fandango. Directions were a little vague, "just stay on what looks to be the most highly traveled road" and "stay left" etc... well, somewhere in the dialogue I missed something. Everything started out great, but then we popped up over a hill and there was Summer Lake and we are on the extreme north end of it. Crap, we are not supposed to be here...

It started out super rocky, then turned into a really fast, fun sand track, we may have run into a fence or two with NO markings, and pretty soon the road disappeared on us. Thirteen freeballers in the (where the) Fuquari valley, as N2moto described it...

The bushwacking in the Fuquari valley was a lot of work on fully loaded bikes. We'd find a line, then it would disappear, we'd find another one, then we'd be wheelying over 3 foot rain runoff ruts. Most everyone was still having fun, except maybe Jack on the StupidEnduro...:rofl

Yea that was fun, after miles and miles of gnarly ditches/rocks, deep sand I was fully exhausted and wondering. "How many times have these guys ridden here and where the fuck are we ( fuquari lol )"

at one point I followed brad through a ditch stalled the stupid enduro and fell over picked it up and kept going.

Followed brad through a bigger ditch, but another katoom in front of me got totally fucking stuck in it and flooded bike I decided to go around try to find a route below. I made my way down to the bottom and I was in some kinda wash. there was knee high boulders in the middle and sand walls on both sides I was like oh great Trials riding on a 500 pound bike.

Took quite a break there, the other katoom behind me was still stuck in that ditch. Neffer came and gave us encouragement finally sacked up and continued on following neffer to the top of the hill thing.

Dropped the pig twice that day..really have no idea how i made it through half the shit I did.

The 950 does not like sand, or I dont like riding it in sand. I have ridden sand a lot on my 450/250 and its fun. The 950 just sinks and plows everywhere quite interesting. I would take those gnarly rock infested trails over that sand anyday. Rocks are fun.

Note to self: Don't follow Brad haha.

. . . I could hear the rain pelting my tent in the morning but then the sound changed to something softer.

    Snow!?!?

Oh geesh - this is gonna be a brutal ride home.

Park, Jack and I rode about 20 miles through some weather and happily stopped at the Summer Lake Lodge for breakfast. I ate as slowly as possible hoping things would warm up.

Jack sportin' his Frogtoggs, preparing for the weather ahead. (It's not any warmer)

Fully warmed up and a decent breakfast in us we head back into the weather on the stinkin' PAVEMENT :puke1

We only get another 40 miles or so before the impending SNOW storm and pull off to wait this one out.

Jack is not in church but he's on his knees warming up on the 950 SE.

    My sentiments exactly Park.

Unless I get a Goldwing, I'll NEVER ride the pavement down there again. If I had a decent tire on the 950, I would've much rather ridden back with the thumpers.

Still . . . good fellas, nice soakin' and the KTM does haul ass! :freaky

Yes, we eventually made it into Paisley and the Pioneer Saloon. Next time you pass thru there get some of this:

    And this stuff...

I'm not sure how this conversation started, something about parking spaces vs. no parking spaces:

    General rowdiness:

Quite a pile of bikes out front:

Once we were all good and liquored up we rode back to the springs. Good thing it's a real short distance. We got good and loud in the pools and suddenly people started dropping like flies. We tried our best to hassle N2moto about his crap tent set-up job. He kept telling us to go away or he was gonna get out his gun...

    The offenders:

It was a pretty ugly scene, but about to get uglier:

Yes, tough guy Jack wasn't so tough when the Fireball, Tilt and Maker's Mark took hold.
