I am organizing an IBA Pre-Approved Lake Superior SS1K ride that will start and end in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Saturday June 24th.

You do the ride, and I will handle the paperwork. No logs for you to fill out and you will receive your IBA Certificate much quicker, also.

Check out the details at : Lake Superior SS1K
If you re-visit, then hit your Reload or Restore button to see the latest changes.

Make your reservations early !! The International Bridge Walk is also this weekend.

If you don't already have your IBA number, go to : Iron Butt Association to learn about the IBA.

BTW, I am also offering an All Yooper SS1K on the same date & time, that also begins and ends in the Soo. A Rider may delay the decision on which ride do, until Saturday morning , even if they pre-register for either ride.

Any possibility for some of us to participate but start / end in Duluth?

No problem !! Just coordinate with me by email or give me a call and also pre-register.

You would also need to find a starting & ending witness / witnesses to record your starting & ending odometer readings. Then after the ride, scan the completed witness form and email it to me along with your required receipts or mail the completed form and receipts to me ASAP after the ride.

My logic that is some people wanted to meet in Duluth, begin our documentation there, hit Thunder Bay, head east and into Sault Saint Marie with the timing to coordinate with the start of the official event. Then we could partake from the Soo towards the west.

Im all for putting on miles, but trying to save 2 extra trips across the U.P. (one across too the start, another from the end back).

I have made the trip around the lake before, so I am more than happy to help coordinate a second group wanting to start / end there. I live about 90 minutes south of Duluth.

And I would like to drop a suggestion - headed east there is NO GAS from Wawa to Batchawana Bay on the Queen's 17 - its about a 140 mile stretch. How you could get caught is that if you are riding the north shore and headed east, you will see stations at a pretty regular interval. No stretches longer than 30-40 miles. But if you make it east of Wawa, you better be able to make it another 140 miles.

I see one of the mandatory stops is in Wawa, I just want people to realize they need to fill up there. My old bike (K1600) I filled up in the town of Marathon, and rode right by Wawa. Made it, but my current bike would have no chance.

Also to note - the border crossing in Grand Portage, MN is not a big one. Its a one lane road each way with 2 or 3 people working the entrance into Canada. Budget some time there, particularly if you are hitting it in a big group.

And remember - IF you have ever had a DWI, you will more than likely get refused entrance into Canada (as being a MN local, I hear people getting turned away for this - even years after the event)

I think you would need to leave Duluth at about 4:30 pm CST to reach the Soo at about 6:00 am EST. And like you said, gas could be a problem, especially at night along the north shore of the Big Lake.

Maybe a better plan would be to start in Superior at about 9:30 pm CST and head to the Soo. You would get there at about 6:00 am and not have a problem finding gas along the route at night ( Wakefield, Ishpeming, and Munising ). Then you could head out with the Riders in the Soo and ride the north shore during the daylight hours and not have a problem finding gas during the day. But BTW, this isn't a big group ride. But it's nice to get to know some of the Riders at the mandatory receipt locations.

Ya, I read about the possible DWI problem that you mentioned in your other post.

Hmmmmmmmmm. have to decide which ride to do. This one or the all Yooper ride. I may do the all Yooper ride and save Lake Superior for the Great Lakes Challenge which I will do for sure next year!

Sounds like a good plan to me, Steve.

What about doing a Great Lakes Challenge, Lake Superior SS1K and Lower Great Lakes SS1K rides in 2018 ?? I think those will be the pre-approved rides I will be planning in 2018.

Just an fyi it appears the yearly International Bridge Walk also takes place on June 24th. I believe it starts about 9am so the riders will be over the bridge. Might not wait too long to make a hotel reservation.
I should be back home visiting during this time frame, I just need to choose this ride or the all Yooper ride......

Bigbob is correct !! Make your reservation early.
I added this info to the ride webpages. I hope it's noticed.

FYI - Initially, I was planning for the ride to start & end in St. Ignace , but then switched to the Soo because the St. Ignace Car Show is also during this weekend.

I just made my reservation at the Budget Host Crestview. Besides our group, there is another MC group showing up that weekend ( and the Bridge Walk crowd ) , so the rooms will go fast. ( $79 plus tax for two double beds ).

Yeah, I liked the Seaway. See if they are still open. Cheap, clean, you could park your bikes just outside your door (motor lodge style) and a sweet old widow woman owned it who desperately needed the business.
