On December 16th I was ready to depart on an amazing trip on my bike that would let me escape the fridge winter cold for the warmth and exciting roads of Mexico, but first I had to go through that little country called the United States.

The day I left was the only chance I had to get a far south as possible before another storm rolled in covering all of the surrounding area with a blanket of snow that wouldn’t leave for weeks.

Leaving at 5:30 am with the outside temp of -12 Celsius!

    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/gKskYCK3PEcXX_Km1pP9rA?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-HcMmhFJI/AAAAAAAAAQg/l42lQF2W7Go/s800/1.jpg" /></a>
I thought I get my accidents out of the way early. All of the sudden ice appeared under an overpass. Next thing I knew my bike slide out of it's lane on the I-5 and a semi truck was heading straight for me! Like in some sort of movie I rolled out of the way narrowly avoiding the back wheel of the truck, the wheel of the rear of the semi clipped the front tire of my bike spinning it further off to the side of the road. I got up and realized that I actually wasn’t hurt and the picked up my bike and didn’t see any damage. The only saving grace of the ice was that my bike and me just slid along not causing not even a scratch to either of us!
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KDMTuz8Kv9cjmFTqd5xySA?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-GnFN8-qI/AAAAAAAAALI/7LOqv2UdjPE/s800/2.jpg" /></a>
Then this truck driver pulled over to see if I was ok.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/JwxgPf0lm9hwN8nYnfjvow?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-HlS-DDPI/AAAAAAAAARo/qVEXfjxfy9A/s800/3.jpg" /></a>
But moments after he pulled over a truckload of uninsured Mexican’s slammed into him!
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/aecxLU9EJUV1dC2zCIKo4w?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-Ge8sYJ_I/AAAAAAAAAKg/nShNtcI3h20/s800/4.jpg" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/z40ZXr6WbPGhHCon-Knlmw?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-FlCZfEmI/AAAAAAAAAEk/6DBDUicNMjE/s800/6.jpg" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/kuK19VO6O2Idmi6yh-z7FQ?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-Fu3_FpzI/AAAAAAAAAFo/5KDAFiOEVKo/s800/7.jpg" /></a><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/wyl_7w5vzVxHtkb-ej7ytw?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-FwseiX6I/AAAAAAAAAF0/Lr2Arx37AZ8/s800/8.jpg" /></a>

Then some strange luck, A fellow motorcyclist, Mike pulled over to see what happened.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ZPrY0ZQ5pdft3uSqnwYsAw?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-Gpyu2vpI/AAAAAAAAALc/Cm-hLUdbOWs/s800/9.jpg" /></a>
Turned out Mike was also riding south like me, only he was going all the way to South America. So we linked up and drove back to the closest town and spent the night in a hotel. In the morning we rented a U-Haul to make it through the now snowy passes in Northern California

The stupid cop had the nerve to give me a ticket!

We arrived late in Sacramento, so we thought we’d stay in the UHaul in the parking lot…yup it was cold.

So back on the road, but it turns out the I-5 was closed just north of LA due to snow, so we have to take a major detour over to Barstow…along with every other truck going south…it was slow.
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3bstYCXhuNXh9rBRoemmCA?authkey=QaMHaVOuRGQ&feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_XRnGo3OhpzU/SY-HhLWg64I/AAAAAAAAARE/t7LVvS0Fa0A/s800/26.jpg" /></a>

I crossed in Nogales, the toll road crossing. I'd been told well worth the $2 toll for avoiding the stop lights and speed bumps in town. Went through quickly and paid my vehicle permit 15km ish down the road.
