Ideas for a new bike to ride to Turkey, please

    the 2nd-hand BMW 650 T-W-I-N can be had cheaply, since most guys want it's Big Brother, the 800GS, for posing value [​IMG]
    (The engine actually produces a little more torque at a lower rpm. Only at highway speeds and above does the 800 really outshine the 650twin)
    Part of improved acceleration of the 800 is the fact that it has lower gearing with a 16 tooth front sprocket vs a 17 for the 650. They are interchangeable. The suspension and ground clearance is the biggie, beefier units, 2 inches more travel and ground clearance. Though in all honesty BMW 800 suspension is not state of the art and requires some mods for the rockier and potholed off-road stuff. There are mods to be had for the 650 suspension that will greatly improve that suspension as well. Respring for your weight with one of the cartridge emulators will greatly improve off road behavior. The last is the wheels. Cast tubeless versus spoke tubed and a 19 vs 21" front wheel. There are numerous reports of the spoked wheels bending on hard impacts, including mine. I think the spoke rims are soft and wider than needed for a dirt orientated bike. Fixes are expensive. I know nothing about the cast, but would think they would be adequate for most situations and the difference in tire size an inconsequential issue considering the other differences.     many, not all, 650 TWINS were owned by careful lady drivers (flame-suit ON! [​IMG] ), and can be had for not a lot of money....meaning they sell 2nd hand at an even-bigger discount than it 'should'...

    a 650 TWIN would do tar WELL (less vibey than a thumper...), and then it could easily do the offroad sections...

    then the 650 TWIN has a much lower stand-over height than many 'hardcore' dual sport bikes, easier to flat-foot/man-handle through challenging areas...

    it needs a good bash plate, of course.

    RWU forks? no real issue, it's still suspension, after all, maybe slap in progressive springs?
    a good number of people do round-the-world (remote) trips with RWU forks, no problemo....!

    Fuel: easily sorted; disclaimer, we SELL a plug & play 7L after-market REAR tank, no drilling necessary, hook it up and ride! But a 5L fuel bladder could go a long way to increasing range, too...

    tubeless tyres? I like, about 90% less time in regular puncture repairs...

    tubeless rims? I do not like so much, but with a bit more aggressive tyre, and being 'looked after' within reason, they will likely survive.

    (Oh, and of course, a big box of rear-wheel bearings! [​IMG] Oh, and tighten the radiator-hose clamps! [​IMG] )

    with the 650 TWIN, you can change the fuel mapping, but not the cams, meaning the 650 can be reprogrammed to get back some of it's 'lost' power, but not all of it...

    Possible a few years ago - ferry to Genoa, 5 hours' ride to Ancona, ferry to Çeşme. But the Ancona-Çeşme ferry doesn't run any more.

    I prefer Ancona for that trip - the timings are good, departing in the pm and arriving Igoumenitsa about 9am. I did arrive in Bari once and it's then a long ride up Italy. And I once took the ferry from Otranto, but I don't think that runs any more. Some people get on the ferry to Greece from Venice.

    I did Samos to Kuşadası once, after 5 other islands. I'd like to do the north Aegean ones, there's a Hellenic Seaways ferry from Kavala going to Limnos, Lesbos and Chios. And maybe the Dodecanese on the way back.

    I don't think Aegean island hopping should be rushed. Often it's based on the infrequency of some ferries - the Kavala ferry runs twice a week:

    Edit: I think the Dodecanese might require some type of two step dance along the islands - go 2 islands forward, 1 island back, and then 2 islands forward.

    Get a slightly used 690 enduro, >2013 model. Add the rallyraid rear tank and luggage rack. You will have a bike that easily runs on larger roads, but works well on gravel and light offroad. Reach around 350km, ABS safety for on the road and if you have some money left in your budget add a britania composites front fairing.

    Anything over 900mm seat height is way out of my comfort range. And I don't really need 280mm ground clearance, 250mm would be fine.

    I'm hoping to avoid KTM, but if they ever make the 50hp travelling unicorn, I'll be first in line.

    I was tempted by the "slow travel" minimalist 250cc crowd for a while. I can see myself owning a Honda 250 in Peru, where there's some legal deal where foreigners can own local bikes for a few years, I think.

    But I want to hammer down 1000 miles of motorways every so often, in 2 days, with ease in Europe.

    Still looking for an easy-to-manage, low maintenance, 500cc/50HP travel/touring bike, 4 years later.

    I rented a Kawasaki Versys-X 300 in the USA this summer and was impressed - a great little travel bike. But I really want a thumper.

    Try a Honda CB500X and if you want a bit more off road ability look at the Rally Raid conversion. Even is standard form it's capable ridden with care. Upgrade to the RR and it's totally transformed. OK it weighs in at ~200kg converted over 196kg in standard trim. Excellent fuel consumption too 65-70 mpg with 17Ltr tank. I made the jump from 1000G 100GSPD, KTM 640Adv and finally sold off my wee DRZ.

    XTZ 660 Tènèrè - Possible to find used around 2500-3000 € , very good handling offroad (much better than one could think, even if its heavy - but still under 180 dry) good protection on motorway
    very good fuel economy , subframe that stand even heavy loads (reason for weight)
    Friends have long passed the 100.000 kms mark w/o problems.

    Simplest and cheapest option .

    The XT660 R have a big problem in standard configuration : exhausts pass under the engine and this is a problem offload, for damages and riding - really doesn't know what were drinking or smoking when they choose this.
    Tènèrè is easier to find , at least in Italy , France and Germany XT660 R are less diffused respect Z

    I'm looking for lighter. The Yamaha XT660Z is 206kg wet and the Ducati Desert Sled 803 (nice looking bike!) is 207kg. My GS is 210kg.

    One day someone might come out with a lightish 500cc thumper. In my dreams.

    I feel your pain, I had a R1150 GSA and a KTM 625 SXC with a 20 l tank and rack. The KTM was About 160 kg gassed up. I don't think a light twin exists (except the aprilia 550). The XTZ 660 is way too heavy for a single imo. The current light bike of choice in OZ is the KTM 500exc. The motor has proven itself to be bulletproof and easily handles the longer touring distances (when not subject to race conditions). I have ridden the CCM450gp and it is great. I wait with interest to see the 600 that they are replacing it with.

    Bulletproof KTM 525 is really exaggerating . its a racing bike that needs constant maintenance, with a frame not thought for loads nor big tank .
