and a lot more topics (just search for india and you will be rewarded with tens more!!)

Ok, lot of links, now lets get to the basics.

Why India in the first place
1- Cheap. Yes, touring in India is very cheap. USD 10 per day for hiring a Royal Enfield for a long period. USD 11 for a litre of fuel. 30 cents for a mineral water bottle. USD 10 for a decent room in a small city, USD 20 in a big city. USD 10 for 3 meals in a day at a decent place. And i can go on and on and on. We usual spend around USD 55-60 for a 3night 4day 1200-1300 road trip here in India on our own bikes. You can easily do 30 day 6000km ride for USD 1500 including everything (just add airfare)
    2 - Diversity
Where else will you find sand dunes, beaches, back-waters, worlds highest roads, monastries, temples, islands, wonders of the world etc at one place. In summers, Leh has places with temp of 0 at night, whereas the same country, around 500km away has temp of 45+ in day time. Where else can you find all this?

    When to go
1 - depends on where you wanna ride too. If you wish to ride to the worlds highest motorable roads, End may - early October. If you wish to ride to the deserts, Nov to March. And so on...

    Bike?
Getting in your own bike can be a big headache. refer to ride reports where members have got in their own bikes. But then the feelings of riding in some other country on our own bike is something! Let me add, it can get very expensive to get ur bike here, the shipment, the taxes and all. Maintainance isnt that much of a issue with big workshops present in major cities.
Most fuel pumps have normal 87 octane as well as 91 octane fuel. Big cities have some pumps with 97 octane fuel too

    Indian bikes?
Most people coming in to India prefer the good old Royal Enfield and for good reasons - the old world charm. But, ride one only if its in a very good conditions coz bad ones can be a pain in the ass. Modern day machines like the 223cc Karizmas can out run the enfields very easily, drink less fuel, are smoother and easier to handle, but lack the old world charm, and soul (for some). Oil change costs around USD 4 (castrol oil) and general service with a wash around USD 6 at authorised service centers

    Where to land in?
Delhi would be a good bet. It allows you to ride up north to Himalayas, explore Rajasthan, go east to Agra / Varanasi etc. Goa, however is however far away : around 1900km south of Delhi. A one way flight from Delhi will cost around USD 100 - 120. Bikes and riding gear too can be had quite easily in Delhi. Delhi burns in summers (45 degrees), chills in winters (5 degrees).

Mumbai is good for those who wish to explore south India, beaches, goa, tea/coffee plantations etc. Goa is 600km south of it, an overnight volvo bus costs USD 15 , flights around USD60 one way. Mumbai usually has a hot and humid climate for most of the year. Nov to feb is pleasant with a max of around 30. Hotels however is very expensive. Expect to pay USD 25 for a decent room (the same would be around USD 15 in Delhi)

    Luggage
You can get steel frames made in India on the Indian bikes into which you can put ur luggage. alternatively, saddle bags can be had for around usd 50, tank bag for usd 40. Bungee ropes can be used to tie more luggage on the back seat.

    Traffic
Bad, very bad. it is always advisable to ride the bike without the luggage couple of times early mornings and then in traffic to get a feel of
it. Remember, the horn is there to use. In India, you have to honk. No ones gives way without honking, although sometimes the flasher works
just fine. Beware of animals and humans on the highways and city roads too. It normally takes 2-3 days to get used to the Indian traffic and once you do, just flow with the traffic!

    Speeds
Good highways allow one to cruise at 90 easily, but keep it low on single lane highways. SPeed limit for bikes in cities is 50km/h, but rarely will you come across speed guns on the roads. So chill. Major highways (Like NH-1 going north from Delhi, or NH8 going west from Delhi) allows you to keep 90-100 easily, but then get used to the roads first and then experiment. Trucks and buses will change lanes first and then use indicators. On highways, keep the lights on.

    Safety
Most of the Indian highways are safe at night too. Places like north-east, states of Bihar etc arent safe after the sun goes down. But then again, i havent seen many people ride into these place. If you confine yourself to north /west / south India, you can safely ride at night too. But do carry all documents of the bike , pollution certificate (usd 1) and ur passport too.

    Hotels , Meals
big cities will set you back by around usd 20-25 for decent rooms, smaller cities will set you back by half of that. Highway side restaurants called as 'dhabas' work fine too. Just make sure its a big one with lot of cars / jeeps around. Meals cost USD 2-3 at a high side restaurant, USD 5-6 at a high end restaurant, USD 20-25 at a 5-star hotel per person.
Chilled Beer costs USD 1 in north India, around USD 1.5 down south (per 750ml bottle).

    Electronics
In india, we mostly have 3pin plugs (the round ones). Adapters (from 2 to 3, from flat to round pins) are easily available. No issues. Voltage varies around 210-220 Volts. Electricity is of a big issues, summers sees lot of power cuts. do carry candles and a matchstick or a torch for emergencies

    Medical stuff
All major medicines are easily available in big cities. There are no major diseases in India now (ofcourse AIDS is there, but then you wont be screwing a 5 dollar pros, will you!). But make sure you have medicines for nausea / headache / pain / bad stomach etc. Jus the usual ones. Always drink from mineral water bottles ( 30 cents each).
Do carry mosquito creams all the time!

    Emergency
100 : thats the emergency number in India. It does work 8/10 times but dont expect help to come your way immediately. Always carry ur country's embassy number and local contact numbers if possible. Having a list of the motorcycle dealers/workshops is good too.

    Riding Gear
Good, quite good helmets can be had for around USD 70-80, jackets with armour for around USD 110-120. So, it aint a bad idea to buy stuff here too.

    Drugs
Yes, places like Manali / Leh / Goa will allow you to go into the forbidden world with ease, but try to stay away from all this untill unless u know someone.

    Phone / internet
Cafes charge around 50-60 cents for an hour of high speed internet. Phones can be had real cheap. As less as USD 25 for a brand new. SIM cards can be had too. Local calls are 4 cents per min, std for 8 cents, local sms for 2.5 cents, international for 12 cents, international calls for around 15 cents (to US). So, this shouldnt bother you much

    Taxis
Different cities have different fares. In delhi, radio cabs (a/c) charge around 40cents per km, non a/c ones around 20 cents. Three-wheelers charge around 12 cents. In Mumbai, non a/c old cabs charge around 38 cents, three wheelers around 25 cents. So dont get cheated. Tips are not essential.

    PS:
May 2008-Sep 2008. Try droppin in here next yr for a ride to the worlds highest motorable roads with us :)

without being personal, might those be 'political' reasons?

and, bunny, why is your post here just now? timing seems coincidental.

the natives here are becoming restless......

    Come on.. :)
What kinda politics? For the GIR, i had to leave my job.. and managed to get a new job with a lot of difficultly again. Didnt wanna loose another job for another road trip :)

as for coincidence, well, i logged in yesterday after ages, and went thru all the topics, specially by chanderjeet, lovemax and all and then romain's India trip etc. Then decided to start a topic dedicated to info on India and hence this topic.I have been posting on Indian road trips topics for years now :)

    ok. i'll play.

i loved the pics in your india book. not much about biking, but great pics nonetheless and artwork by sunny nonetheless. sunn's also a switched on dude.
i didn't like the shit about "the dirty children of india" though. (:scratch)

now, if you've read the threads, please explain to us here and now what's with this oz road trip? is it a money raiser for the people invloved? if so, how? or do those involved have other and if so what benefits? and if you don't have the answer for the oz trip, answer the same questions for the india trip.

come on, mate, spill the beans.....or piss off.
(and be full and frank about it)

Shmerel : i have never interacted with you much, but it seems you arent too happy with the GIR / Gaur.
My sole idea for being at ADV ( i joined way back in 2005) is to show this side of the world. Thats it.

As for your request on the real thing, i dont know about GAuR trip as i wasnt involved in it. As for the GIR, the main aim, again was to show India to others. Yes we did have our own share of fun, publicity, but then we did battle hard against a lotta odds. I would say, lets leave this here and carry on with what ADVRider is all about : promoting touring, and thats what im doing with my topics.

If u have any further questions, i would say ask sunny. not me. The GIR / Gaur have been his ideas, and so he will be able to help you better.

Now.. shall we stick to the topic?

PS: your remark "piss off" wasnt that good mate. I have hardly known u (or for that matter u have known me) and how you feel about things here. Why dont you piss off from this thread and make urself useful??

i get the impression shmerel's opened fire cause we. as in more than few of the oz contingent, got trampled by indianfella in his opening stanza.

I do trust you don't care to follow his lead, maybe it is a cultural thing that we do not understand.

there is a very suitable forum for vendors and i'm not to sure this thread doesn't belong there. answered below, i couldn't quite understand the intent of the opening post as i thought it was asking a question then went on to post a whole lot of travel stuff.

edited as i stand corrected. welcome bunny and thanks for your informative thread, i hope this grows.

Mouse ; i understand what you say. Vendor ? - i dont run a travel business here in India pal! Im just tryin to help ADVRIDERS who may want to come to India. Thats it. Thats all I wanted.

Please keep me away from the GAUR / Indianboy thing. Please. I have been a regular contributor here with my personal rides in India (see my sig for example). I have been a member since 2005! I hope u take this topic in a positive sense and not a bad one. I have met 5 round the world riders in India and helped them in the same way

Shmerel : U might have had a bad episode with Sunny here on advrider, why take it out on me, or on this topic for that matter?

I wonder what makes this such a fiery topic.
Bunny just landed with few threads composed into a one mark of share.
And Shemrel I dont know anyone here either but why this drag of things from other forum here on this thread. ANd we are here to talk about our rides and how we enjoy it.
Infact this sees a little too much to talk when you talk of your past experiences with others who are not involved here.

Can we keep this out of all the melodrama pouring in here.
I guess Bunny never was a part of GAuR or for that matter, he is just a friend who helped Sunny.

Anyways I just wanted to tell Bunny, carry on good.. this all happens everywhere some one or the other will pop up with issues.

    Cheers

I'd just like to say this thread made me think about doing trips in India, and other places around the world, and find the advice and links to be useful.

That said, I also found it odd to find it in the Asia/Oz/Kiwi forum, as it has nothing to do with the Asia/Oz/Kiwi and so should probably be moved to a more appropriate section of these forums.

That said, I am insanely jealous and with one day to go on the type of trips you have! And do enjoy reading other peoples stories in India in the Rides section.

we didn't get a full and frank answer.

and btw, i have no beef with sunny. i just don't think we got the full picture (pardon the pun).

Does it? well, in that case I stand corrected. I'm a bit geographically challenged.

This section is so full of Australians, we start thinking it's our own America! Those asians and kiwis need to keep us in check.
