Indian builds a prototype street bike that looks like a dirt tracker. People complain that it looks like a dirt tracker. I guess that Indian
did their job correctly and achieved their goal.
I don't see anyone complaining. We're all trying to figure out how the damn thing could be built for the street with minimal changes for practicality.
I posted this in another thread about this bike, but after reading the comments in this one I can't help but cut-and-paste them here, emphasis added.
I'm exactly the target market for this bike: I grew up going to flattrack races with my uncle, who built bikes for a couple of guys. When I got my first 50cc bike when I was 6, as soon as I could ride the thing he started me racing flattrack on it. I was at one track or another most weekends for seven or eight summers racing and watching others race. That was my entire formative experience with "motorcycling". To my eye, a flattrack bike with just the "right" lines (subjective, I know) is the epitome of what a motorcycle should look like. And that Indian concept gets the look right as far as I'm concerned.
And of course people will criticize it because it doesn't have an all-day comfortable seat, or a 300+ mile fuel range, or provisions for mounting luggage, or full coverage front and rear fenders. But those people are 100% missing the point. Street trackers are tributes to a very specific kind of race bike. I would love one just to cruise around town on, and to stare at sitting in the garage (or living room). I have another bike with a fairing and a comfy seat and heated grips to use as an every-day ride, to commute on when it's raining, to travel on. I'd own a bike like that Indian (or a Mule street tracker) just because the style of it makes me smile.
All that's standing in my way is a set of six winning lotto numbers...

Maybe I should jump on the bandwagon to revive the thread? How about this: Where in the hell is my wife supposed to sit when we're touring two-up? And that wheelbase is going to make for some lousy launches at the drag strip. Total piece of shit.
Your wife should either be on her own bike, or give you an afternoon off on your FTR1200.
This is not a “sole form of transportation” kind of bike imho, but a toy.
I fail to see what’s wrong with that wheelbase btw. It’s the product of having 19” wheels, a big lump of an engine, and a fairly steep (agressive) steering angle...
As a comparison, my Desert Sled has a 1505mm wheel base with 24 degrees/112mm trail and steers totally fine. The FTR1200 has a 1518mm wheel base with 25 degrees/94mm trail and weighs roughly the same...

Good god man...this is not the type of bike to tour around with your ball and chain.
This is a bike for bar hopping to pick up loose women that have a room within staggering distance of the strip club.
this bike deserves to be built even if it sells in very small numbers at higher-than-you-would-expect prices, it will help broaden the brand in the mind of people who do not buy 800#+ cruisers. If Polais doesn't, I hope whatever Harley is cooking up with its XG or Sportster refresh will, somebody needs to reflect the deep roots of American Flat Track Racing, it's a form that is well entrenched in the motoring psyche but only seen at the consumer level in a few one-off customs.
