    So, the new tyre/ire arrived, and a break in the weather meant I could get at changing it, and so far, some miles later, it still seems to be holding air.

    If I recall correctly this was followed by a later episode (The Grid? Can't find a copy or upload), which detailed, as far as detailed was for the time*, how BC Ecclestone Esq & Gordon Murray sidestepped the 6cm rule via driver adjustable suspension ride height - pull a lever/drop the car. Once it proved dominant in the early season races**, everyone & their timekeeper naturally felt obliged to follow suit, but by that time Nelson (SM) Piquet had racked up enough points to put him in the frame to overcome a self defeating Reutemann in a car park at the end of the year. Compliance to the 6cm rule was seemingly described in the rule book as being measured in the pit lane***, so those delightful lateral thinkers (supported by their legal beagle Mr Mosely) simply designed a system which dropped car on pit exit & brought the skirts back down to the track surface, closing off the in-rush/side-bleed of air & stealing back the lost down-force. In all probability the Hydro Pneumatic Willams version of the rules workaround was the beginnings of the later adopted then dropped then readapted & dominant suspension of their 92/93 car.

    With reference to this, it's my understanding that over some of the recent MOTOGP seasons Yamaha used a GPS aware self adjusting suspension system to optimise set-up for each track sector. A sort of unnerving refined ongoing auto-adjusting version of the handlebar sport/touring map switching on more recent superbikes? It's a bit like the reported brake effect modulation caused by KERS harvesting during the braking phase on current F1, or the auto-adjusting power delivery map switching of the fuel consumption responsive MOTOGP bike electrics of recent times, which leave a rider wondering what he's going to get every time he twists the wrist. But if I start digging into supporting information for that I'll never get back to sleep... And I'm not even going to start thinking about Prost for all intents turning off the turbo to dominate in the wet at Brands Hatch one year...

    From a great distance I watched ground effect develop from a very early BRM wooden concept model, thru Lotus 78 (non sliding skirts) into the sliding skirt 79, into general production in cars like the March 791 in a previous post or Ayrtons F3 RALT, but to take a sleep deprived delerious diversion or two I have a memory of appearing at a public speaking event (aged 15?) to explain the fundamentals to a throng of uninterested peers.

    My only regret regarding public speaking is of a missed opportunity - while expounding Soundtudio to 1500 uninterested 'peers' I spotted my friend Tom in the audience, and while my mouth was tripping over telling them the project age range my brane was at that very moment finally realising who he reminded me of - the singer from The Bay City Rollers. I ploughed on but I'd so much rather I had stopped to explain my dual-think, and ended with "Shang-a-Lang Tom"

    ** As evidenced by the unexpected success of the less than speedy Hector (here's the cash now give me the keys) Rebaque?
    *** Oft with a comical 6cm wooden block on a stick, and sometimes with laser measurement, tho this was disputed by the recalcitrant teams on the grounds of the flatness of the bit of pit-lane chosen for the measurement station. Of course the background to all this was the wrestle between FISA & FOCA, and the commercial aspirations of BCE, for which I both thank him & curse him, but that's another story...


    Aaaaaaand finally. In all frankness I must admit my icon (here & elsewhere) is very much nicked from a session apparently connected to the following photo, to which I am unable to find rights attribution, tho it appears to be connected to a Spanish Woman rider Ana, via the FB of BMW Boxer Club Pirineos Sur?     Wet @ Silverstone this Fri? - http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2637827 12-16C, 19mph Northeast wind - 'Mostly cloudy early rain clearing to leave showers on Friday. Rather cool with a mixture of bright/clear spells and occasional showers, some heavy, over the weekend. Windy at times.' Back in the last MOTOGP/Silverstone period rain/sunny spells at the GP meant sloppy mud banks packed with knotted bundles of steaming Motorhead fans :D

    I'm inclined to take the day to walk around the circuit in reverse from Club (nearest corner to my in route). The grandstand enclosures are free so I ought to be able to get thru them & cover most of it, other than Wellington Straight. When I was there last year you had to cut from Luffield to Abbey via the old Bridge Corner & then work back up to Farm Curve, The Loop & Village/Aintree.

    As is usually the way, I had sorted all my kit & packed all my stuff well in advance, early yesterday in fact, and at least three times. So when I woke earlier than intended this morning there was little to do but drink tea, take the customary precautionary dose of Imodium* & watch the clock until it said something in the region of 8AM. Silverstone is only 25 miles or so from here, so there was little point in setting out too early when track action started with MOTO3 at 9.15AM, but I wanted to get going as I&#8217;d chosen the slightly longer, more obvious/busy route. There&#8217;s a diagonal back way that misses all the traffic snarl ups, but it&#8217;s a little more remote so if I broke down&#8230; you get the picture.

    Anyway, there was another reason for taking the main route &#8211; my youngest son (12**) attends a specialist school for students with Aspergers Syndrome etc. in a medium sized village en route (if I took that route), and he gets school transport every morning. It&#8217;d occurred to me that the timing of my journey would probably coincide with his, and sure enough as I worked my way thru the tardy traffic I came upon what I thought was the car he shares with other students. After following for a while I overtook at the next long clear straight & looked across and waved at him as I passed, he seemed to recognise me as far as I could tell. I&#8217;ll ask him later :-) I stayed in front, and waved a clutch hand behind my back to him at his turn off in the village. I do hope it was his car, and that it was his little face I saw in the front seat, where he likes to sit every day, otherwise I&#8217;ve completely confused a car full of strangers :-D

    The remainder of the journey was uneventful and as I approached the circuit the predicted rain started to fall lightly, not so much that it began to rain, more that I rode into where it was raining. For once the forecast seemed to be right and tho I wanted to see MOTOGP bikes blasted in the dry, sliding & squirming on the mildly-wet-but-drying track seemed to be on the cards :-)

    I swung off the main road at the first roundabout and played dodge the car park attendants as they were waving everyone to a field way off, and I really couldn&#8217;t be bothered with the walk. So instead I managed to sneak thru empty car parks and wander blandly past tabarded pointing attendants to pull up just where I had planned to, right in the 1st space directly in front of the ticket booth & adjacent entry gate. I must admit that as I pulled up a crowd of passing pedestrians paused so, tho I&#8217;m not into that whole &#8216;park & draw a crowd&#8217; mentality I couldn&#8217;t resist revelling in revving the nuts off the DMW just for the fun off it. I blasted it up & cut the engine after a pause at the red line and a great rousing cheer of appreciation rang out, and even the polis man smiled. So far, so good :-D

    Unfortunately, this is where trouble kicked in. On all the pre advertising, web booking system etc., the on-the-gate price for Friday was £15. But as I progressed toward the front of the queue it became clear that the price was now £20, as a number of customers ahead seemed to be briefly debating said inflation with each depressed ticketeer in turn. I say &#8216;trouble&#8217; because all I had was the £15 I had expected to pay, and so I began grumbling & cursing to myself, as is my way, quite volubly, letting people past as I worked out what to do.

    Now just as an aside, at this juncture, do rest assured there will be a letter. I like writing complaint letters, everyone needs a hobby, & they work more often than you might imagine&#8230;

    My prior irresponsibility/showing off now paid me back big time because as I reached the window, just as I was preparing V2.2 of my on-the-hoof objection that was to be oh-so-pleasantly presented to the supervisor I was just about to ask to see off to the side, I was joined at the window by a total stranger, he reached across me and with a grin dropped a pound into the pay-tray.

    * They&#8217;re not so bad on the Friday, but British circuit lavatorial facilities are best avoided, especially as the weekend progresses :-D

    His friend fed another, and tho even now I can hardly persuade myself it transpired, other hands tossed in enough to top up my ticket, and leave me enough for a burger I hadn&#8217;t budgeted for&#8230; Like I said, I&#8217;m really not into that whole &#8216;park it and a crowd gathers&#8217; thing that they go on about in the magazines. I don&#8217;t need it, and I grow tired of the &#8216;what have you bloody done to that/it&#8217;ll be alright when it&#8217;s finished&#8217;, tho their irritations tickle me, but in this case it seemed to work out for me :-)

    As I went thru the gate I asked the ticket-tearing-man if I was ok parked there, and he replied in the positive, telling me he&#8217;d keep an eye on it, and as I strolled up onto the bank opposite the pits just as the MOTO3 bikes started to warm their engines the rain started to strengthen slightly. Perfect timing. I walked up toward Abbey corner at the start of the session, and gently fell over on the mud while the bikes slid past thru the fast right-hander. I noticed that the stand there was restricted entrance &#8211; a luminous coated functionary checking for grandstand passes, which was a pity as I&#8217;d planned to tally a while there, but mammon triumphed, tho I can&#8217;t say it&#8217;s entirely unfair to hold back a couple of premium placed stands for pass holders. But then again free roving grandstand access was always one of the concessions made to those of us poor enough to only be able to afford the Friday, and most of the &#8216;reserved&#8217; stands were empty&#8230;

    There was a reasonable clump of pass holders down one end of the main pit grandstand next along, but access was again denied tho again there was plenty of room, So I worked back towards Club. Having previously viewed from the end toward the finish line I resolved to work the other end of the covered stand towards The Vale. The rain was still floating in the air so I took up residence a block of seats in and watched the people to my right get steeped in our finest Britannic rain as it angled into the end of the stand, tho it soon died off . MOTO3 were still running as the track began to show a slight drying in the area where the majority were running, but with the width of the track there were a great variety of lines being taken. A rider (unidentifiable as you can&#8217;t see the bloody numbers) dropped it on the brakes into The Vale and was marshalled off into the adjacent pit lane, another high-sided on the exit of Club, and I settled in to observe where comparative riders were short shifting between the two corners, and how some kept their foot in place ready for the change while others tap-danced back and forth, seemingly unsettling the bike thru the shifting of weight? As the PA/commentary were entirely inaudible (tho to be fair there is a radio feed) it was impossible to distinguish which approach was part of producing a faster lap &#8211; all I can say is that the smoother riders seemed faster.

    Having said all of that I should add that this being a wartime airfield, and its location thus being well known as a convergence of various winds, there was quite a gust blowing across the track from behind me, and these little MOTO3 chargers were certainly being thrust about by the squall blowing past the end of our stand. Indeed Crutchlow later reported almost being blown into Lorenzo by the wind thereabouts. The track had begun to show the light grey of dryness as the MOTO3 tiddler session ended, and we had a couple more slip offs & run-ons with Danny Kent ending up fastest I think?, however in the short gap before the MOTOGP first free practice/ise session the rain returned briefly and took the track back halfway to where we&#8217;d started from. And then they came&#8230;

    I think I most missed a dialogue. Whether they were accurate or misinformed I made observations, but only had myself to tell.

    Bautista & Spies went over their respective tops at the far right of my vision, each leaving trails of sparks, and the root of the crashes appeared similar on the big screen opposite. I found it interesting that once wheeled behind the barriers that after some time they were in turn collected by a van from the spectator side of the fence which then drove off on the external service road. Think I&#8217;ll be getting me a van and beating the officials to it next year&#8230; I also noted that Spies had to wait another 20 minutes or more for the van to return, and pondered on the frustratingly lost build time incurred by the team. As the bike was loaded he strode off thru/ough the spectator enclosure toward a lift on the back of a circuit bike, nearly being taken out by a large passing umbrella sent flying by the continued wind. I wonder how Dorna would have reported that?

    Rossi was clearly pushing it, and as reported elsewhere set fastest time. When he&#8217;d first run past at the start of the session he was greeted with community cheering as expected, but I noted this continued for the next few laps, tho/ough even this subsided once they got beyond installation laps & into the meat of the session. Tho/ough Rossi was generally fast, he upped the tempo at the end to go less than a tenth fastest from the Kentuckian to repeated general satisfaction as the big screen changed as he crossed the line to our left. In its contemporary iteration that bike likes the wet, as previous results demonstrate.

    Crutchlow was on the gas from the start, and was fastest with ten minutes to go, but I noted he&#8217;d spent a while following George Lawrence so I wonder what he picked up there? I notice he&#8217;s on a different kind of gas in FP3 today tho/ough&#8230;

    I read of this ages back, but can't now recall the name to re-research - Greenhill? Greenhall? Something like that, but my connection is so slow it makes protracted searches impractical, which by coincidence is why I stick up some of the guff you've seen here, i.e. so that I can view it on a better connection elsewhere. But anyway, I have a vague memory of this 3 wheeler being half a Mini & blatting the shit out of everything else before the inevitable banning, this being a time when sat-up-bike+sidecars, and kneelers both shared grids with Morgans & the like. As demonstrated repeatedly, I do like an oddity & it reminds me of the BEO :1drink
