Boy, I typed this question into google and spent 20 minutes reading arguments that started to range into 240v 3 phase instead of getting an answers.:huh

Taking a trip and packing along iPad, Sansa mp3 player, and Motorola phone. Rather than having 3 wall warts in my bag, I thought I'd just take the iPad 10w charger and the USB -- device cables. Any issue with this?

I'm not a techno-geek so I don't know if the USB jack on the apple charger is wired like every USB jack. I'd do a test but I didn't want to fry my non-apple devices just days before the trip.:D

To avoid this, I figured one of you FF geniuses had tried the same and either had success or let out the magic smoke, allowing me to learn from your success/failure.:lol3

No problem- I travel all the time and refuse to have 3 chargers. I use a 2amp charger for everything.

AS RomaDakota says, USB is standard, all devices run on +5VDC, the power supply may have different amperage capacity depending on generation of USB, and on application, some power sources are capable of up to 5000 mA (milliAmperes), that is 5 A, or 25 Watts.

USB power sources will not hurt USB devices. There might be a power issue, too small of a charger won't charge high power charging systems, in that case it just suts down. I have one charger that can't take high power stuff, it was a car charger. It has been tossed. I plug any device into any charger I have handy. Camera, phone, iWhatever, don't care, just plug it in and it all charges just fine.

Yup, it being 2A is the key. Just for future reference for the OP makes sure you always have the iPad wall charger. 2A for the other 2 is fine (though they might get hot from the extra juice) but a 1A wont charge the iPad.

1A or even less will charge the iPad, just slowly. It may not show charging on the display. It would not (likely) start up a fully discharged iPad though.

If you are stuck with a low power charger (less than 2A), it should charge faster if you plug it in to charge AND then switch off the iPad. Just avoid draining the iPad battery to zero.

Evidently the Apple Stores are now offering a 12 watt charger that looks like the 10 watt version (white block). I suppose this is charges a little faster. I think the white cable that comes with the 10 watt charger is not included with the 12 watt version.
