I just posted a RM250 up for sale for part out. The serial number plate says 1984, but I looked up the number online code sheet- not sure if was reliable source.

And it suggested it to be 1985 RM250 - I can't find that link anymore. Anybody know how vin coding works or where to look?

Now that I have it for sale, I want to make sure I know what I have - what clues on the bike can I look at to determine age.

Does this picture help determine year- or do the 1984 and 1985 model years look alike.

The letter in the 10th position in the VIN gives you the year. An '84 would be an E and an '85 would be an F.

does the serial number plate say it is a 84 model, or manufactured in 84?

I assume you know that the model year and the build year can be different.

    Thanks for that- I'll look

And yes the build year and model year being different is kinda tricky when selling. You are telling someone it's ie. 1991 and the vin plate says 1990.

It looks like an 83 model to me. I had one way back then and really liked it.

If I'm not mistaken, the 84 had front and rear drums. The 85 went to a front disc and rear drum.

I have an 85 that looks like the one you have pictured with the exception of the black frame. I'm guessing that your frame was painted black at some point.

yes it was a blue frame painted black.

And it was the 85 "F" in the serial number

It went for $600 with "all" the parts and some new stuff like pipe and recovered seat etc.
