    You know the song, right?

“I’ve been to Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota......”

It lists 93 places that the narrator has been to in four rapid fire verses.

I remember listening to this song years ago, thinking, “Well it can’t be that hard to go to all of those places, can it?” Turns out it’s pretty hard. The locations are spread out over two continents and some are difficult to reach. Though I’ve scoured the internet, I can find no evidence that anyone has actually visited all 93. Both Johnny Cash and Hank Snow were lying to us!

I’ve been planning this trip for a couple years and in a few days I embark on the journey of a lifetime. My tentative route has me covering 49 states, 19 countries and around 40k miles.

I guess I’d have to describe myself as an ADVrider lurker. I’ve followed many journeys on this site, but have never really contributed. It’s just my nature to not speak until I feel I can add to the conversation :-).

My desire to post here has two major motivations. The first one is at least somewhat altruistic: I want to give back to this community which has been the source of much entertainment and insight through the years. The second is entirely selfish: There is a crap-ton of incredible knowledge among the community here and I would like to tap into this knowledge base to assist me in my journey.

    Introductions

I’m just some random guy from Nebraska. That’s about all you need to know about me for now. But let me tell you about my love, Annie.

Annie and me by Lake Ontario....with a terribly improvised luggage solution.

As she currently sits, just a few days before departure.

She’s a 2012 Honda NC700X. Her namesake is Annie Taylor, the first person to survive Niagara Falls in a barrell. This bike is just perfect for me. Cheap, capable, efficient. It’s not great nor terrible at anything. I’ve never fallen in love with the look of it or the “feel” of it, but I am head over heels for its functionality.

If money were no object, I’d probably be riding something more “advanced”, but this bike is a great compromise. Has there ever been another vehicle produced that gets 60+ mpg, goes 110+ mph and starts under $8k?

She currently sits with a touch over 20k on the clock, which is maybe a little higher than I would prefer at the outset. That said, it has given me the opportunity to practice all of the maintenance procedures multiple times. Furthermore, the undersquare engine should be better suited to high mileage than some of its short-stroke compatriots. I do know that total mechanical failure remains a possibility so I have budgeted for a second bike (don’t tell Annie).

    The Plan

To go everywhere, man! Let’s take a look at the maps. I’ll link rather than embed since you will probably need to zoom in:

    North America

    South America

As you can see, the locales are mostly located in the US (76 of the 93). However, nearly half of my calculated mileage will be in Central and South America (seriously, South America is huge).

Since I am leaving in June, I’m planning to focus on northern places first and wind my way south. I’ve estimated the trip will take about 8 months, give or take a year or two :-). I’ve planned my route to be five “loops”, each one originating at home. Nebraska’s central location makes it a great place from which to attack the northern continent. There’s nothing better than changing a tire in the comfort of your own garage. I may also need some mental health time at home, since there is no way I can know how a trip of this magnitude will affect me.

I should admit at the outset that I am also chronicling this journey on a personal blog. In order to be considerate of the guidelines here, I am going to refrain from posting its address. Since that site is geared towards my friends and family, it will probably take precedence in getting updated.

It will not be my intention to just cut and paste from my blog as I believe that would be disrespectful to this community. However, I may at times include excerpts to keep me from typing the same thing twice. I’d appreciate any advice or feedback about this balance. I hope I am conceiving it correctly.

    Thanks for reading!

I would like to touch on your comment about being a lurker and not commenting because you feel you are not contributing to the conversation.
This is a mistake approach. Just pressing like or a simple comment is contributing to the RR. And it means alot to the person's report. And you will find this out as you continue your own RR. If no one reacted to your RR in any way... Try to imagine how it would affect you. Part of doing a report is to have interactions with fellow inmates and to know people are actually following.
You'll see what I mean as you continue.
This comment is for all the silent lurkers.

    Cheers and safe travels

Ooo! I've had this impulse as well, but I've never chalked up the actual locations and road miles. Holy sh**! You've got my admiration for making this real. Keep the rubber side down!

Really well articulated, goodcat. I appreciate the insight. I probably should have read this message years ago!

Yep. The Australian version is probably my favorite. So many strange sounding places and the tempo is crazy fast.

Wow! This is awesome! I can't believe I never found this before. It looks like he got pretty much everything in North America. A lot of great images during the choruses too. I wonder if he actually got to Schefferville, Quebec? It looks like that one might be a stock image. There's no road to get there, so I still need a plan to get up there. Thanks for sharing this, HighFive!

    ...and away we go.

Had a wild day of final packing, but got everything in. I don't know if I am ready or not, but ready or not I'm going.

I said goodbye to the other vehicles in the stable...

....had to stop my roommate from breaking a bottle of champagne on Annie's nose...

...and got ready to head out.

First leg is to the north. I have a cousin in Saskatchewan who is graduating, so that will be my first destination. I will get to begin travelling with my parents and grandma in a car behind me. That sounds nice and all, but they are all really hardcore travelers so they will probably push me pretty hard. :-)

It feels strange that years of preparation have now ended. All there is to it is to do it!

    A modest proposal:

Please post a list of all the destinations in the song (yes, I've heard them, but can't remember them all!).

Then (just a thought); as you visit each one, highlight/embolden/italicize/whatever it by editing the original post. Your call surely; as I said, just a thought.

    Best wishes on your ride!
