Four things I see wrong with your plan.

    1. Heat
    2. Wet Season
    3. Lot of bitumen
    4. I can't come with you:D
Just JEALOUS. Give it a go.

In January??, you're mad. The country in NW NSW and SW QLD kills people at that time of year.

Good luck to ya.........but as the others have said HOT & up north Humid/Wet.
Not for me at that time of year.

Another point to consider is less passing traffic in the remote parts & therefor less Help if needed.

Thanks guys - looks like I will have to make sure we stay hydrated. I am not too keen on bitumen either, but need to finish in 20 days. For some reason I have to visit Birdsville - need to go and see Big Red - not sure why. Perhaps because I have not been in the outback yet. Would like to see what it's really like.

Orange to Dubbo is 150km, maybe stretch to 250 if you take every back road available. Hardly worth a full day, better to spend that time elsewhere I'd say.

Oh, and has anyone mentioned it will be as hot as the hobs of hell?!

Bloody 20 days off, you lucky lucky bastard!

Like most others have said, hot and humid, but better to go when you can, rather than stay at home and wish you did! Where are you staying? There is a room for 2 near Bundy if you want or 25 acres to camp on:D. Jono.

I don't think each town he mentions is an overnight destination (considering there is 36 and he is going for 20), just letting us know his route.

As others have said, it could be a bit warm, but I would have a back up plan just in case of roads being cut by rain.

Or just make up plans on the spot if roads do get cut, it's more fun that way anyway.:D

As others have said it will be bloody hot.... and usually wet enough to stop traffic. If it is unseasonably dry.... might be a goer. Take lots of water, a sat phone and let everybody know where you are and where you intend to be.

Already had a death from thirst near Birdsville only a couple of weeks ago.

The bloke that died had no water and left his vehicle, that is planning for trouble. Rule 1 lots of water, rule 2 stay with vehicle especially when someone knows wher you are.

How long will it take to get from Sydney to Birdsville - based on my mapping tool it can be done in three days - but don't know how reliable this is. Day 1 is Sydney to Bourke, Day 2 Bourke to Quilpie and Day 3 Quilpie to Birdsville.

The Sydney to Bourke day is doable easily if you don't stop to look at much, the other two days look fairly relaxed.

I did Townsville to Winton, Birdsville Longreach Townsville on a KLX250 one easter (4 days), that was my first decent run on a bike.

I did it at a fairly relaxed pace (the bike was still restricted so I had a 100kph max on flat road, and dropped to 90 at the first sign of a hill), but I don't stop and look at much.

Edit, this is my ride report from the trip,http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249285

I don't think I had spell check when I wrote it, and my grammar is pretty atrocious, oh and the pics are crap because the camera shit itself but you might find something useful in it...
