Awesome thanks Jax! I'll do a little research on your cameras. I currently have a Canon SD1200 IS pas. Nothing special and simple to use. I'm just not overly pleased with the lens (3x) nor how hard it is to use with gloves on. I don't suppose there's much I can do about the gloves but I can certainly get better lens quality. Do you have any cameras on you wish list that you'd recommend?

I really like the images from my current Canon, but the lil Nikon is good for what it is. I would probably say I like the Canon sx230hs, zoom was nice while it lasted :ddog it also has a GPS feature which I havn't used much, but it's cool! It logs the coords in the meta data which allows you to see where you took any given shot on a google map. It shows thumbnails that you click to get the whole image. The cannon is 2x the size of the lil Nikon which makes the nikon easier to use on the fly. I can't really give a recommendation though... except to say that the lens optics are way more important than the cameras megapixels. imo

Can't wait to see some ride reports from you!!! :deal

I know little to nothing about cameras and everyone I talk to says the same thing you said...the lens is more important than Megapixels. Thanks for the input!

I've run the Dismal Swamp Canal by boat several times... A really pretty place. The swamp is not dismal.... :evil I'll post some more photos of it later.

Into Elizabeth City NC, a great little town. In an area of the US where almost everything is named after English nobility, Elizabeth City is named after a bar maid. Founded with a land grant from a bar owner!!! I knew I had found a home here and bought a small place several years ago.

It looks overcast but it is mostly smoke. The Alligator River NWR peat beds were on fire (again)
Generally happens during drought and can burn for months. I didn't get any photos of it but the ash was falling like snow in spots.

Roanoke Island has an interesting colonial history. click here for more.

Wanchese and Manteo were natives who helped the bumbling colonists.

    Copied from wikipedia
Roanoke Island has been known in European-American history for its significance as the site of Sir Walter Raleigh's planting of an English settlement with his Roanoke Colony in 1585 and 1587. As the fate of the final group of colonists has never been determined, myths have developed about them. Stories about the "Lost Colony" have circulated for more than 400 years. In the 21st century, as archaeologists, historians and scientists continue to work to resolve the mystery, visitors come to see the second-longest-running outdoor theater production in America: "The Lost Colony."

Roanoke Island is one of the three oldest surviving English place-names in the U.S. Along with the Chowan and Neuse rivers, it was named in 1584 by Captains Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe, sent by Sir Walter Raleigh.[1]

It was for thousands of years the site of ancient indigenous settlements. Archeological excavations in the early 1980s at the Tillett Site at Wanchese have revealed evidence of various cultures dating back to 8000 BC. Wanchese was used as a seasonal fishing village for 1500 years before English colonial settlement. Ancestors of the Algonquian-speaking Roanoke coalesced as a people in about 400.[2]

Yuppers, aka Low Country. hard to believe you're in the same state as Asheville. :evil I love the ruralness of it. No monstrosities like VA Beach, Myrtle or OC MD. The entire NC Island chain, from where 64 meets 12 down, there is only 1, yes only 1, franchise store. The Food Lion in Avon. Not one McDonalds, Pizza Hut, or Walmart. No big condo buildings on the beach, no high rises of any kind!! Heaven. I have been buying beer and groceries from the same lady in Burrus' store in Hatteras village for almost 40 years!!!! :clap :D
