Butt-time. How much time actually sitting on the bike. Not counting time off the bike, time stopped to snap photos, time with the bike in the shop- just butt time. I get a lot of questions, and I'm working on one now, asking, how much time sitting on your ass- So I said to myself, well, I said, it's about 12,000 miles from the US/Mexico border, to Ushuaia. I don't know what my actual moving average speed was, but I'd say it was probably between 30 and 40 mph. Sure, I zipped along at 80 once in a while, but in some of the mountains, I was scrapping my pegs at 20mph. Simple math then, 12,000 miles at 35 mph takes about 343 hours, or 68.5 days of 5-hour days. So if you have 3 months, you can do plenty of side-trips and slow-explores; you can fix your bike, fix your self, and take a day or two off every week; and you'll have a great adventure. Except that it takes at least four days to get from Ushuaia back to Buenos Aires. (And I think about that long to get back to Santiago, right?) So if you have three months, you basically have 115 days to get to Ushuaia. Right?
