Sorry to hear about your spill and resultant broken collar bone. Man, don't rush your recovery; stay ahead of the pain.:deal

I had a nasty 15mph spill on a remote downhill pea-gravel road in MO last September. Clean break of 4 ribs on my back.
Difficult to move around for three months. Five months have passed now, I want to ride so bad. Winter won't secede; 5+ inches of ice/snow this week.

These are (Easter Eggers), I prolly keep the four prettiest of them in the end and sell the rest as started pullets.
They will join my flock of 18: Marans, Aracaunas, Easter Eggers, Black Start, Buff Orphingtons, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock, Wellsummer, Barnvelder, New Hamphire and one "other" :lol3

And I cheated anyway: I gave the chicks and 50lbd food to a friend, who just got a few herself. Once they are out from under the heat I'll get them back :D

My wife has a pet chicken at the school where she works. I showed her the chicks in the KFC box and told her we should get some here, but she reminded me that we need to "train the dogs" first. It's always a bummer when the dogs get the baby chicks, bubbies, etc..

How do you train dogs to leave the chickens alone? I was thinking maybe a mean goose or a big rooster would teach the dogs respect, one dog per training session of course. We wouldn't really want a goose, because they poop like dogs, except all over the place. So, how do you keep the dogs from killing the chickens?

I believe the Indians used to tie a dead chicken to the dog's collar until it rotted and fell off. The dog didn't want anything to do with chickens after that. I had a dog that got into the garbage once. I double bagged it and tied the bag to his collar for a couple of hours. He never got in the garbage again.

If you have an adult dog that already figured out that chickens are "good eating", it will be hard.

My chicken/goat-run is 1/4 acre fenced and in the beginning the dogs were allowed inside only while supervised. I did lose a few quickens that flew over the fence during the training period, and I had to smack my dogs with a dead chicken over the nose before (caught in the act). Luckily my mutts are mostly LGD's or herding breeds with a relatively low pray-drive. By now I can free-range the chickens without any worries, my only problem is the pyr stealing eggs :lol3, or the little one eating layer feed...

Adding baby chicks is a bit more tricky. They don't seem to get the same respect and are "fragile" when played with :norton, that's why I'll have to keep them in a separate dog kennel till they are almost the same size as the rest of the girls.

The oddest thing I had happen, was a new to us chicken buried alive by my pyr (not part of our clan yet). I found a leg sticking out of the ground the next day, I dug her out, showered her off, gave her some food and water and she was good to go (she did run in circles for a day)... she still lays a few years later :lol3

And all this time I thought the only types of chicken were baked, grilled, and fried.

Sent from the voices in my head and transcribed by their drinking buddy...
