RAD Manufacturing pulled through and got me this quickly, I've been having fun being a total hooligan on my street legal 450's, but I really miss the 990 and it makes me stare longingly at the pile of parts and disassembled back end of it, lol! Ta-daaaa! Dropping it off to be laced and trued in the AM. I am in the middle of a move right now and just don't have the time or room to do it myself, My guys owe me a few hours anyway,
Of all of the things I can do to a motorcycle, lacing a wheel is something I've never learned to do. I know it isn't rocket science, but still.
Any reason you can't use the stock spokes if the bike is fairly new?
Lol, lacing a wheel is tedious... Very tedious. A decent trueing stand isn't expensive (~$80), but a spoke torque wrench can be. If you consider the time needed though and you plan on doing more than one wheel it's worth it to save paying shop rates. Great way to spend a snowy winter day, lol!
The stock wheel center is shorter than a normal skinny rear 18" by about a half inch. The stock spokes were about that much too short to really have a good amount of thread contact in the nipples. I did order spokes and they are long enough, but forgot to check off heavy duty spokes so the ones I have are pretty sloppy in the spoke holes. RAD has a second set on its way to me now. I just wanna ride this beast, The wait will pay off though and as is normal in modifying stuff it's a learning process,
Well, now she's a 990ADV-SE!!! What a difference!!! Just a short recon ride, but it turns like I would expect it to, handles great in the loose stuff and doesn't feel sluggish in the bum anymore, lol!

I'm probably going to head south on a solo trip soon to hook up with some buddies in Spokane, Seattle and then on down to San Fran. Mostly paved the way there, hence the T63 on the back. I'l put a T63 on the front now too. When I get down to San Fran I'll pop on something more dirt friendly like some Michelin Deserts or 908's as the guys I'll link up with will want to head out to the desert and/or do some trails in Mendocino or similar areas. This bike is aaaaaaalmost what I want it to be. Suspension and probably ditch one of the front calipers are about all that's left.
Bled the brakes amongst other servicing today while waiting to pick up the wheel and only one caliper bled dark... Leads me to believe I definitely have WAY more brakes than I need or use. Might not be a mod for everyone, but after seeing the brake fluids and interpreting that one caliper is basically dead weight, I'm for sure on side for that mod now.
Well... it was a short romance filled with excitement, disappointment, thrills, fear and hilarity. Alas, I have sold my 990. The new owner is pretty happy and I'm happy someone else will enjoy it too! Times have changed for me and I felt I should sell it before I destroyed it. Not working now and may not be for some time to come so I have downsized. I find myself back on a thumper for travel and for the most part spend more time on my 450 in Baja than doing anything else, lol...

A little sad the 990 is gone, super stoked to have another thumper and definitely ready to put another 40,000kms on this pumpkin, Priorities have shifted, though, and I feel a big single to travel on is more economic for me and a smarter choice for now. Any bike will take me anywhere I want to go... Hell, I'd be happy with a Sherpa or a Vespa if it's all I could afford. Remember, it's not WHAT you ride, it's THAT you ride (except if it's a Harley ape hangers and straight pipes cause get the fug outta here with that breh).
I have very enthusiastically been following your thread with plans to pick a 990 of my own soon, and then you go and sell it off?!

I followed along as you hit this thread with great enthusiasm on your 990 ownership. You left many stones unturned in your 990 Adventure. I hope your experience was rewarding and fulfilling. A lot of great conversation and insight was passed through your thread... along with your passion to dial in the maximum potential of the bike for you. LOL! Sorry man... The guys I ride with stuck with their thumpers and frankly, I'm out of place amongst them when riding. The 990 out-classes most everything and I felt I was losing touch with my group of dudes. I still love thumpers and this 640 is a beast. I'm gonna run it into the ground, lol! I didn't get as much time on the 990 as I thought I would, but again... Losing touch of what riding was all about and losing touch with my dudes showed me that bigger and faster and better isn't always right. I'm completely at home on a big single and I don't have to worry about going too fast or too far compared to a thumper.
Well... I hate to say this (and I'm sure I'll get flamed), but the 640 is a charmer... It's truly a perfect fit for me and will champion the way I ride much better than the 990 did. It's less expensive, easier to work on, has more suspension, is lighter, carries more fuel, burns less fuel... I think I'm a bit in love with it. Was a complete tear down and rebuild, but very worth it. Sounds like a tractor too!
I'm only hoping this info could be used as a lesson for some who are looking to upgrade and end up with a bike that is more than they need. Go light, go fast, go far.
I think it all comes down to riding style. I did a ride with a CRF250 and a KX250 last weekend on the 990. What surprised me was that I was in the lead in all but the most gnarly rock sections, even on the hillclimbs. and the others are much better riders than me (and younger). If you have a screw loose and enjoy triple digit speeds in the dirt it's hard to beat the big girl. I will add that until I sent my suspension off to Konflict I was apprehensive to really push the 990 in the dirt... it just makes it ride like a much smaller bike with good suspenders. That said, I would love to own a 690R for the trails! I'm glad you found the right bike for you.
Absolutely it does. I in no way meant to say the 990 isn't capable. It's a thoroughbred through and through for certain, :) What it came down to for me was cost (because I break a lot of stuff), and what I needed a bike to do. The 640 does everything I did on the 990, with 100lbs less weight. You can still go pretty dang fast, but when I really wanna shred, I have the 450EXC which is about as stellar as it gets for me. It's finely tuned to my riding habits and is my go-anywhere machine.
I was on the fence about doing the boingers on the 990... and in the end it was a cost I couldn't justify on top of the bike. I'm now unemployed, $7000 richer and have a big single with Rider's Edge boingers already done. It was a no brainer for me. If I had bags of cash, I'd still have the 990 and I'd still go ride single track with my friends and their 200's. That sh!t never ceased to make me laugh... ha!
I still miss the 990... but for now it's become a dream again. Maybe one day I'll find a beat up neglected 950 that I can RR or something. :)
