I have the opportunity to buy a 1990 kdx 200. It is street legal (big plus) and I would have about 900 in it by the time I got it home and all sorted. It needs the front breaks fixed and the gasket between the pipe and head. It is in rough shape cosmetically but says it runs good. Think I should go ahead and snag it???

    Thanks
    Andrew

That is a fair deal, with the street legal title making it worthwhile.

The KDX200 may be one of the best 2-stroke "trail" bikes ever built. On the $900 price for a '90 model, that sounds a little high to me. Not sure what the rest of the country values these bikes at, but in my area I saw two in the last 3 months...an '04 and an '05, both with the original tires...for $1500. These were clean, low hour bikes. I almost bought either at different times due to having owned one before and loving it. They're both gone now or I'd pass it on here. This seems to be the going price for a relatively pristine, later model one around here.

I too am looking at these. I'd pay that for a later model in decent shape if it had the street cred.

Around here, we have late 90's to early 00's non-street legal ones for about $1200.

The KDX is huge fun! I wouldn't buy one as my only bike in the stable, but they are an excellent trail machine for short money. Many agree that the 200 is a better trail bike than the 220. Plenty of parts and aftermarket available.

I feel like the western states they are cheaper. This is much better value because of the street title (hard to plate a 2 stroke in pa) and the price is 650. I said 900 because of 70 in gas and tolls and 125 or so in title and registration and then misc stuff it needs

I rode one once, for two minutes. In those two minutes I flew like a bat out of hell, wondering if it was worth leaving my bike, car and trailer behind to keep riding it. It was that good. The owner is a big ornery dude so I brought the bike back. I still wonder if I chose wisely.

$1000 is a real price dividing point. Above it, you'll see mostly the last generation models. At/below $1000 you'll get the occasional good deal on a 1995/later and lots of the previous generation bikes.

I've always felt the opposite. That they are more expensive out west. Same for the KTM 200s. No idea how easy it is to plate one where you are. I'd imagine 9/10 bikes are probably not going to be street legal. OTOH this one is, maybe for not much more you can find the last generation (95/later) that's plated and in better shape.

    It's a good bike. I had a 1998 KDX220. Kinda wish I'd not sold it.

That was a damn wise choice, Rich. Besides, you only had a quart of fuel!

I feel like I could always atleast get $900 for it once I clean it up. Anyone think different? And I hear they are fun bikes so i would probably keep it as a summer toy.

I have an 01 that is street titled, good shape with KX fork conversion and a few extras. If I were to sell it I would ask $1500. They can be bought fairly cheap and are solid near bullet proof bikes,

Check out KDXrider.net for more info if you do snag it up

I had a 91 and was really surprised at how good it was.

I had a 2000 KTM200exc at the same time and I actually preferred the KDX.

I ended up selling it because the KTM had all the road going gear attached and the KDXs was butchered beyond repair as well as the fact that the two side cylinder thingys on the power valve are known to brake often, and while this is not detrimental to the rest of the engine, they are not being made anymore.

I managed to get the second last right side one, but there were no more left side cylinder thingys in Australia.

I have since gotten rid of the 200EXC, and wouldn't get another but I would get a KDX with out a second thought.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jeff Fredette won many ISDE races on a KDX 200.
