Key won't turn...

    My 2006 Wee has just over 50,000 miles, and it has provided reliable fun.

    New problem just developed as the key seems to not unlock the mechanism.
    It started binding occasionally so I applied a bit of dry powdered graphite to the key hole. Seemed to improve the situation, but it still balked at times.

    Problem has returned....

    Any ideas short of ignition lock replacement. Those are a bit expensive.

    There has to be a way to pull the lock barrel out and clean inspect the parts.Don't know about your bike but most of them have a little hole somewhere...push a pin in there with key in the lock and everything comes out without little springs or tabs flying out.

    Graphite...not the best lube for that. And that's according to the very good local locksmith. I asked him if Teflon Dry lube was acceptable and he said go for it.

    You can post a pic of the whole switch if you can....on bikes like mine you can remove the "electrical component" part of the switch and also clean/lube that. Just did my bike after following someone else's electrical gremlins. Fiddly but feasable and they even gave me a sticky thread on that over there for the next guy eventually facing problems. Most of the problem with mine was with the steering lock mechanism and no way to see or clean that unless I took the "electrical component" out first.

    Steering lock mechanism....lubed with Castrol Chain lube. I think that's acceptable, sure nice and smooth now.

    I was getting worried that I wouldn't be able to unlock my steering and that wouldn't be good considering how easy it could be to power on my bike and steal it, I keep the steering locked.:eek1

    I'd bet the key is well worn... my spare key is in a bag at the bottom of a ravine in Colorado. Luckily, me and the bike did not follow...

    My problem is with the center mounted switch as opposed to the steering lock.

    After working on it, I'll post my outcomes.

    flush it out with wd40, use a lot, let it sit for a bit then hit it again. This will get the gum out of the switch and let the tumblers move. But wd40 will gum it up so you have to get it out.
    If you use canned air and a rag you will get most out. careful of the eyeballs. The use a contact cleaner or rubbing alcohol to finish cleaning it.
    Let it dry then liberally add dry graphite lube. then cycle the key a lot to get the graphite all over.
    All my suzukis (x4) have needed cleaning on a fairly regular basis.

    Hmmmmm..........:hmmmmm my switches rarely ever need cleaning..............maybe 'cause I don't put graphite in them.:confused

    Thanks to all for their input...

    I used the WD-40 splash with the compressed air follow-up. Worked great...

    Spent the afternoon riding through the southern end of the county, rousing flocks of Snow Geese with thousands lifting at the same time. What a sight...

    This small town does not have one place that has Teflon lub on the shelf.

    Next time I go to the big city, I'll have to go to a big box and find some.

    Always good to know that a deep bench exists at AdV. Lots of talent available to help with our large and small challenges.

    Most all locksmiths will recommend "Triflow" and nothing else.:D

    Been using Triflow for 20+ years and it works great. You do not need a lot. I use electronics spray cleaner available at Radio Shack or auto parts stores. It evaporates fast and leaves no residue.

    Park the bike in the nice hot Texas sunshine then a few air blasts as suggested above. Lube the key and give it the old in and out a few times. Works great.
