KLR max weight load

    I was wondering if you can carry more weight on a KLR 650 if you change the supension and the sub frame bolts? I am a bigger guy (6'5" 310 lbs) and the max weight(401 lbs) of the bike limits me from taking passangers. Let me know if you have any sugestions. Thanks

    Sure, most every mfg of every product adds in a safety margin so going a

    little over would be feasible, beefing items like you mentioned would widen the safety curtain some as well.:ricky




    Now with that said, I'd never go that far overloaded on a KLR. Because then your getting into whether or not the brakes can handle that load (any klr owner already knows that answer).:brow

    Then there's wallowing at road speed in turns that the klr's not good at dealing with when overloaded.:kurt



    So can you?....Sure, should you?....To each his own!

    at 6' 5" I can't imagine you have enough room to take a passenger for very long. For short hops, I wouldn't worry about it. If you were thinking of a run up to Thunder Bay, however, I think you might have a problem. The load ratings are conservative then again, the more you push it, the more likely you are to stress something. I doubt tire or even suspension mods would fundamentally change that really.

    Just do it the way they test bridges (except the one in Minnesota): load it until it breaks, then fix it and weigh the last load. There's your carrying capacity... :lol3

    I have carried WELL over the max payload. I have upgraded subframe bolts, upgraded rear spring, longer spacers in the forks, oversized front rotor, SS braided brakelines.

    Backroads, not too bad. It is a handful on the highway. Live weight is usually easier to carry than luggage but still not something I would want to do for more than an hour and not at all with traffic.

    If I were setting out to plan on that kind of load I would:

    Do the heavy duty drill-through subframe upgrade
    Upgrade the rear spring and/or shock--if you just increase the spring rate the shock will be under damped if you aren't careful.
    Progressive front springs. You will need something to deal with brake dive when you:
    Oversize front brake and SS lines. You need a LOT more stopping power
    Re-gear it. A 14 tooth countershaft sprocket will give you a lot better power and gears for low speed and only hurt above 60 or 70.

    sounds like a lot of stuff, but they are all pretty simple and basic mods. Keep in mind that the KLR's rated load capacity is more than most bikes out there (more than a Honda ST1300!).

    you'll probably want new fork oil when you upgrade the springs... probably 12.5 or 15wt and play with the oil height and preload. there's also a damping rod mod, or the Race Tech Gold Valve cartridge emulators that should provide additional improvements and with the valves, adjustability for the front end.

    The Elden Carl mod? It invoves drillin' one of the damping hole out to 1/8".

    I have ridden my KLR from Montreal to Alaska and then to La Paz Mexico with two people and alot of gear over the last year. *I have only put the rear shock to the stiffest setting but everything is stock. *I do have a tank bag and side bags on the front that are homemade to keep weight on the front. *

    We have riden alot of off road like this and have never really bottomed out (i ride slow off road)

    You should be fine just get used to the weight. *It will be a little shaky at low speed. *Make use you tire pressures are high (i use between 30 to 40 psi). *Give youself lots of room to brake (i got ebc HH brake pads for the front which really help).

    The KLR is an amazing work horse and does well over loaded. *Oh and the back subframe bolts should be replaced too.
