I had thoroughly enjoyed the last 160km. I saw several sports bikes going for an early run. The last time I'd been on this road was in a car to see the Australian GP at Eastern Creek in '93.

Onward to the open cut mine at Singleton, what an eye opener. Not sure what will happen to the hole when there is nothing left. Plant a few trees I surpose.

The country opened up around Muswellbrook. And I just loved to hear that faint induction sound every time I went up the gears.

I needed a break and fuel. So Scone was the next stop, with 388km on the clock I was making progress. The old KLR was returning 23km to the ltre. Same as on the Outback ride. ( I had cleaned the air filter, but that didn't make any difference)

Just north of Tamworth I stopped at Moonbi lookout. great views.

The day was starting to get away from me. I could have stopped and taken photos all day. But I had our Xmas Street Party to attend to tonight. I would have to "crank it up"

I had a feeling the inland ( New England H'way) was a bit longer than the coast road. I stopped briefly at Uralla. Thunderbolt ( Fred Ward ) a Bushranger was shot dead by police in 1870. It appears he is the Hero of the town. At least now he is bringing some money into town rather than taking it out.

I had my head down now. Into Glen Innes at 2pm, a nice little town but three servos had closed down. A quick refuel with another 342km up.

Tenderfield the next town, 91k to the north. A decision was made to head toward the coast at this point. If I were to ride in the dark I wanted to be on good, well used highway, not country roads where roos could be an issue.

The roads were very twisty, About 20 k out of town I was flashed by a couple of cars. Around a tight RH a motorcyclist was down. It didn't look good. The big cruiser was upright but the rider wasn't moving. I feared for the worst. Several motorist were assisting. I asked if there was anything I could do. Nothing. then I saw one leg move slightly and though that was a good sign.

I continued on, 30 minutes later I passed the ambulance that was despatch from Casino. It would be at least another 1 1/2 hours before he would be in a hospital . ( I have since phoned Casino and Lismore hospital but could gain no info as I didn't know his surname. ) I sincerely hope he is on the recovery trail as we speak.

At 5.30pm in Lismore, I phoned my wife to let her know I'd make it to the party by 7.30. I pushed on, Loving the KLR more with every km covered. More fuel required at Mudgerabah ( 15.6 ltre for 367km).

Finally home, the party was in full swing, I showered, opened a beer and then realized I had not had lunch.

With 1155km for the day I could not have been more happy.

I think I am falling for BIG SINGLES. What a bike, nothing fancy, not expensive, With two trips combined of over 7000km ( total milage since new of 10907km) I am IMPRESSED.

    total distance....2181km
    total fuel used ..91.95ltres

    LOVE MY KLR

Take care and thanks for reading........Ian Robinson

Fantastic Ian, I look forward to your next ride :D Any idea's where that will be too??

I bet that beer was good after 1155km  With those sorts of km in a day, you could be over here in Alice in 2 days !! I'll have a cold one ready for you.

    Cheers

    Geoff.

    Geoff,

Tks for the invite. only been to Alice once via Plenty H'way. ( 4x4) good trip. I want to get down around Ceduna, Streaky Bay in March. Also include the salt speed runs at the same time if possible.

The KLR rally is in the area at that time as well. Trouble is too many places to go. Too much to see.

It is a great country to ride.

Thanks for the pics, grew up in western Sydney spent a lot of time riding around Colo and the putty was visited pretty often as well, good memories.
Bendemeer to Port Macquarie along the Oxley is worth doing next time you head South if you enjoyed the Putty.
Not the quick way but worth the detour.

Ian , nice report . I think you captured the whole "nice ride" in it . Enjoyed your pictures and will keep a lookout for future reports . I will probably never make it "down under' , so really enjoy seeing the county through other riders eyes .
