    Thanks so much for the info. This app will help me on the road to post pictures and write ride reports as i go.

    The images below are from my riding in Ocitilla wells by the salton sea in southern Califonia 2 weeks ago. We camped there for 5 days and i practiced my sand riding. The "road" was so sandy that I started riding beside it where the sand was more packed. I saw some holes as i was riding and the next thing i knew the ground collapsed and the front went into the ground and stopped dead. The bike just stood like that (first picture). The ground all around the bike was also full of holes and soft.

    I tried to drive out but just dug myself deeper in.

    I ended up getting the bike out but it wasn't easy under the hot desert sun at noon.

    Savoir-faire sorry about the political posts. Our Facebook page is a mix of the motorcycle trip and what we think is wrong with the world and how we can fix it based on what we learn from traveling.

    This is your RR and your opinions/observations are of value.
    Much more so because yous guys are two-up.
    The perception women have varies from the males and the lady should post also IMHO.

    Since you're new here contact or check the RRs of jammin and strickingviking.

    Hi guys, caught your note on our RR, we are currently in Phoenix awaiting the arrival of our new/secondhand bike, we too will be two up so lost the luxuries. :eek1 ... easy to spot us we will be the dodgy dutchie and cheeky chinese pimples aboard a KTM 950 SE called Maya.

    Will keep in touch for sure, our plans are Baja now that we did the mainland top.

    Any Mexico advice/help we can give you we would be happy to share the fresh and up date of do's and don'ts from our experience.

    Check out the Latin American section too, great info and great support in Mex too.

    Help from the KLR experts to keep us going

    I woke up from my alarm at 8am. I was so excited because today was the day the famous Eagle Mike the KLR expert would help me with my 2011 KLR650.

    My girlfriend (Candice) and I had been staying with Randy, the founder of San Diego adventure riders, for about 1.5 weeks. We have our own master bedroom and washroom here and have really enjoyed our stay.

    I can't help but think back to how this all started. So many people in San Diego helping us based on one craigslist add. A couple weeks back I posted an add for help with my valve adjustment on the bike. I could not afford the over $300 the shops wanted and I also wanted
    to help during the process to learn more about the bike. When you want to travel for more then 10 years every cent counts and it helps working with people instead of just going through a company. From the add many suggested Eagle Mike as the KLR expert. I had herd of his doohickey fix even in Canada but I did not know how to contact him. Someone else suggest posting on San Diego adventure riders forum and that the these local off road riders would help. I got alot of people willing to work with me from my post on SDAR but it was hard to borrow shims. I got in contact with Randy the founder of the club. We suggest we go for dinner. We went for dinner and we really hit it of with Randy, we told him that we were couchsurfing and the we were at a new place every night. Randy suggested that we stay in the master bed room of his place for a while and here we are.

    While we were at Randy's he kept making calls trying to help us with the work. He got in contact with Carl a good friend of Eagle Mikes. He said we could meet at Eagle Mikes shop and would help me with the work.

    So that brings us back to the morning of Dec 18. I got up and started watching how to videos on youtube for the Doohickey and valve adjustment, the two jobs we had agreed on to be the most Important.It was pouring rain that morning so i was not looking forward to the ride but it was only 20 minutes away. I packed my lunch and a change of clothes incase i got wet and then headed out.

    When I got to the shop I wasn't sure I was in the right place until i saw the KLR behind the bars (picture below)

    Mark let me in and Introduced me to Eagle Mike. I pushed the bike around and into the shop and Mark started working on it right away.

    I lay out my travel tools hoping I could be or some help. I took of the side panels and the air-filter which I wanted to clean.

    Carl checking the shims. They were all at min so Carl moved the intake to the exhaust and then got 2 new 250s from eagle mike for the intakes. They are now all at the max so I should get lots of riding out of it before they need to be changed again.

    After riding in Occotilla wells I now finally get to really clean my airfilter.

    I got one of the first of Mikes new low profile magnetic oil drain bolts. The magnet is strong enough to pick up a ratchet. Metal that moves past the bolt in the oil will now stick to the bolt. You can also take the bolt out with a 8mm allen key in the middle.

    After everything was done I thanked everyone and asked what i owed them. I was shocked at how much less they charged me then a shop. What an amazing bunch of guys taking the time to help me out. The shop beside us was closed by now so we could not get the bike out the same way. Mike, even though his leg was giving him problems, took my bike down a flight of stairs, what a great man. I thanked them all again and jumped on my bike. I drove to auto-zone next door to get a spare liter of the oil because my bike burns about one liter every 5,000km. I then drove home and was surprised by how powerful the bike was. I felt great and ready for the next more adventurous part of the trip. If people help us out like this whatever happens it will all work out. When i got home i was so happy and told Candice and Randy of my great day. I then went to bed thinking of the people that we will meet and the adventures we will have as we go south and around the rest of the world.

    Our most recent travel video while staying at Randy's place in San Diego. We are getting ready here to go into Mexico. At the end of the video I take the bike to Eagle Mikes ( in the rain) for a valve adjustment and doohickey fix. I have 4 more videos and 15 more to cut. I will post as time goes on. I want all the Canada and alaska videos posted before we go to mexico. Once we get to Mexico i will try and post an edited video every week of our trip progress.

    Did you upgrade the sub-frame bolts ?
    Your load looks like the ultimate strength test for the sub-frame and many have failed with less loading.

    A lot of people ask us how we can afford this trip. For this trip we are trying to live as cheaply as possible. We want to find out what we want in life and then how much money we really NEED. We camp alot for free and cook on a kelly kettle which has a double wall with water in it to boil it. We can boil 1.5 liters of water with a handful of sticks.

    When we started the trip it used to cost us about $100 for both of us per day. Now most days are about $20 for 2 people and we are still in the USA. We camp and couchsurf to save money. We buy cheep food. Our only costs are food and gas really. I do all my own maintenance and people help us out. All parts are ordered online to save
    Money.

    I did work as an Aerospace engineer for a few years. I was traveling to Germany for work and was payed a lot to travel so we have money saved up. As we travel we will try and work with people to travel as cheap as possible. I work odd jobs and my girlfriend will teach english as a second language. I will volunteer and work on Engineering solutions for the poor. Traveling with little money is much more of an adventure then hotels and not meeting people. I am excited for whats to come.

    As for what we have, below are pictures of everything we had when we started the trip. We have alot more stuff and have lost or thrown out stuff too. We now have front bags (i will explain with pictures in another post) and strap alot of stuff ontop of the top bag, which is bad because its only rated for 12lb, we must have over 50lb. I am working on a list of everything we have now that i will post soon.

    This is what was in our tank bag. Alot of dry food, spot, maps, plugs ect. This bag is also a backpack which is great on day trips.

    Stuff that goes in the top bag and saddle bags. The camping stuff goes between the top bag and Candice. We have a computer, the kellykettle and so much more. The front row is what we wear,helmets, jackets etc. Keep in mind that all our cloths are not in this picture and still have to fit in the saddle bags (we roll them to save space)

    The front bags. How to keep an overloaded KLRs front on the ground.

    The front end was too light and i couldn't steer. I decided to get front bags and move stuff from the back to the front. We bought $50 bicycle saddle bags and first put them over the tank under the tank bag. They were in the way of my legs so we put them over the windshield our curret config.

    We used rubber straps behind and in front of the windshield.

    We put the bottom strap of the bag around the crash bar. This holds the weight of the bags to this strong bar. The windshield straps are only to hold the bag in place.

    But ya with all this stuff i am worried about the rear shock. Lets say i am poor and want to ride it till it breaks. Would that work? Lets say i go into mexico and drive for a week and it breaks. Can i hitch hike to town order a new one online for general deliver to a post office. Camp and wait until it gets there and then install it? Sounds like an adventure to me. We have no schedule so these things are easier.

    On a side note. I think I would come up with a more clever/durable mounting system that beats rope... like 1" straps from West Marine...lol.

    I've read other Ride Reports in which the shock has given up and caused big problems. Getting it there by air is a problem if they refuse it on an airline because it's filled with nitrgen gas under preasure.
    The other problem is because a shock is valueable , so some countries want to charge large customs fees.
    If you have time before you leave the U.S. , maybe you should look into at least a stronger rear spring.
