    Ahhh! Good thinking Thnx! Maybe that's where I saw it. Am doing 685 kit... doing Thermobob mod is actually recommended in the instructions... and he's the guy. Thnx again.

    I consistently got 280 miles/tank before rejetting and a lexx exhaust, and I now hit reserve right at 190 miles, just to verify some of these numbers.

    I got these numbers earlier today:

    180.9 miles with 3.88 gallons, without reaching reserve. That is 46.6 mpg. Stock carb, filter and exhaust. NGK Iridium spark plug. Riding twisty roads between 4000 and 5500 rpm most of the time (min 2500, max 7000 a couple of times). 81 octane.

    This is the best I have got during 3000 miles with my new-to-me 2010 KLR.

    KLR will probably run on it though, so I shouldn't laugh.

    My mileage has ranged from 51 to 56 mpg over the last 1000+ miles. Hit reserve between 240 to 250. Mostly in-town commuting, very little freeway, some trails and backroads.

    I have been doing in town commuting since I'm restricted to city streets. I did hop on the highway for a couple of miles with a buddy, took a peek in the tank today with ~130 miles on the trip meter. Tank appeared to be more than half full, and I normally cruise between 3000-4000rpm at the most. That's a good sign to me.

    I bought the thing for commuting, so if it's giving me these numbers then I'm satisfied.

    Condition I bought a klr with a modified seat and
    The seat is horrible so a stock seat would b fine
    Or any klr 650 seat has to better than the one that's on

    Hi Jared, you will have more luck in the Aus section, or one one of the KLR specific sites (klr650.net or klrworld.com - both have Aus sections at the bottom) or you could try and modify it yourself or call John Moorehouse of Ergo Seats 0419 730 589 (as you're in Brisbane) for a professional fix. :freaky

    Don't want to go pedantic on you, DD, but . . . the 81 octane designation may be the result of one or both the following:

    1. Different countries "crack," or distill gasoline to different octane values.
    2. The US octane designation on the pumps in this country is the result of the average of two values; the "motor" method figure, and the "research" method figure.

    serangelc, who posted his mileage with 81 octane gasoline, is in Columbia; don't know what the octane production and rating policies might be in that country.

    From my travels in Mexico in my misspent youth, Pemex "regular" would make a Chevy six knock at sea level; don't know what the rating was then, or what octanes might be available there today.

    Reckon you ain't from around the "oil patch," but speaking of octane, a by-product of natural gas pipelines, known as "drip," condensate, or casing-head gasoline, would make any engine clatter. But, the price was right ("free")!

    ...for this ride http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=844165 toatal miles were actually 180 using 3.7 gallons 48.65 mpg on my 1990 KLR 148/50 jetting (if I remember correctly) 80 miles of it was slab running at approx. 60mph with 14/43 prockets. Not too bad. Curious to see what my milege is doing the same ride, same route, same bike, the difference being I was riding with someone else. Curious to see if there was a difference. More stopping and going and rode about the same.

    Gas milage? Loaded and 75mph + - worst 32mpg (riding into a 60mph headwind/sidewind in Northern MT. Best, 58mpg riding up AL with a tailwind. Usually about 46-48mpg.

    I have an '09 and haven't made any modifications to motor/carb/mechanical. The last two times I checked milage I got 52 mpg and slightly better than 52 mpg. I use 87octane and ride 70/30 asphalt/dirt so speeds very anywhere from 35 to 70.

    I get 52 on my stock 09 slightly less in cold weather. Ive played with jetting but went back to stock settings because of poor fuel economy. My stock 02 model got better 56-57 ?

    So sorry to interupt the gas mileage conversation but I'm needing some advice. I've been looking for a new dual sport bike because my 95 dr bit the dust a couple months ago. Today a guy came into our store and mentioned that he's wanting to sell a 95 KLR 650. 11,000 miles, its supposed to be in pretty good cosmetic shape and has new tires. I know it has a dead battery but thats not a big deal, I bet the battery off my DR would fit it actually. So my question, Buy it or no?? He's wanting 1000 but I'm sure I can get it for 800 which sounds like a good price to me. I don't like having a bike thats gonna need a lot of work though so what do I really need to watch out for on this bike? The DR had a big overhaul in 96 so used parts were nearly impossible in this area. Did KLR's have anything like this? So pretty much any advice would be great!

    If the bike is fully functional and not missing anything, that would be a fair price for the bike.
    But $800 would be a better price.
    Grab a battery and start it up.
    Take it for a quick ride and go through all the gears.
    Look for signs of smoke in the exhaust.
    Look at and smell the oil.
    Check all the electronics.
    Look for rust.
    Look for any fractures in the frame.
    Find out if the doohickey was done.
    Etc...

    The biggest thing is that if you decide to do a 685 kit (or alone those lines) I think you need a different cylinder. Beyond that, check the doohickey and broken/missing bolts, and ride the wheels off it. As far as parts, very little has changed on these bikes in 25 years. Finding parts really isn't an issue.

    I would pull the valve cover, check the valve clearances and pull the cam bearing journal caps one at a time to ensure they're still in good shape. There's some pics in this thread showing what it looks like when the journals start galling: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=671941 If the cam bearing journals are showing signs of galling, repair is very expensive (requires a new head). I guess what I'm trying to say is that what initially might appear to be a good deal may not be if you need to throw a lot of money at it later.

    The conclusion: There was still air in the system. We took the lever off. Used a 1/4" ratchet extender to push the piston farther than the lever was capable of. There was basically about an 1/8" of travel. Once that pushed the rest of the air out, we continued a couple more pumps and pressure built right up.

    The really good news is that it was all worth it because this new CZR system is much more powerful than my stock system was.
