I have a Versys and and a '93 KLX650 sitting next to each other in the garage. Maybe I'll find a donor for the motor and give this a shot with the KLX (no I'm not rich enough to cannibalize the Versys ). The KLX is already a much better off road bike than the KLR, plus has USD forks, good shock, proper wheels and a better frame and brakes than the KLR.
I have to say that is one of the coolest bikes I have ever seen, I would gladly give up my modded versys plus $$$ for something like this.

does it look like the motor might fit? the down tube seems wierd on the klx
Awesome build. I spent a good chunk of my lunch hour going through the smugmug shots. You guys did a great job with everything.
JDrocks splices longer legs onto the ninja. It is another way to use the parrallel twin motor, and possibly cheaper. However your build on the KLR is very nice also.
You're right, but it would seem possible to split the front tube high to get around the case. Not a lot of thought on this yet, but it's a start.
It could be the first KLXE.
The only down side is the fewer aftermarket parts.

Are you going to make a 'kit'?
Take some careful measurements. The KLX has a perimeter frame. I question whether you could wedge a KLR motor in there.
I have had a few requests for kits and I am considering it .
For getting it going what would people want included?
For me I would like just the bottom portion frame mod to mount the motor. Everything else could be bolt on.
That would be nice.
What would you do for the , skid plate, and header?
