2 hella 500's wired into the stock switch....
The better setup would be one driving beam one fog as the driving beams on these are fairly spot-ish.

I guess I didn't pay attention the first time I looked at your site about the KLX650c conversion and the translation needs translation:D. Is that a KTM fuel tank as well as the fairing you transplanted on the KLX?

I'm looking to get back on a bike after 25 (or so) years--if my wife and I can overcome her "concerns". :D Anyway, what is the life of the KLX 650 engine? The KLR folks say 100K on that engine should be reasonable--is the KLX in the same league?

itsatdm , the photos I looked at show him making a tank. amazing!

to get 100K out a single big bore ( w/o a rebuild?) may happen but its way outside the norm. also its depends on use, maintence etc....

the engines are similar in design but differ. longevity is probably close to the same,

I've got a 2003 Suzuki DR650 that's been a great bike, but like the KLR it's kind of a hog if you want to do true off-road riding. I've got a BMW RT for touring and a BMW 1150GS for Big Pig dualsporting and want a true enduro for the stable. So I've been shopping and have settled on either the KLX 450R or the Yamaha WR450F. Both are around 100 pounds lighter than my DR650 and are true competition enduro bikes. Since the Kawasaki dealer is about four blocks away I'm leaning in that direction. The nearest Yamaha dealer is 30 miles off, so that's not really a big issue. The Yamaha is supposed to be getting an aluminum frame for 2007 that they say will be a big improvement for weight and handling. The Yammie will be about $7,200 US in 2007. The KLX 450R should be available "sometime between May and July" according to my dealer. It will be a 2008 model and probably be around $7,400 US.

It will take about $150 in parts and some effort to make the KLX street legal so I can ride it from my house to the hills (needs a brake light & switch, horn & button, and left-side mirror to make it street legal). The other good news is that it comes with a 6 month warranty that you can extend to 3 years, not bad for a competition-oriented machine! They warned me, though, that riding it in even one race would void the warranty.... There should be good support from dealers and after-market for the 450, and hopefully they'll sell enough of them that they won't become "rare" like the KLX 650.

You guys have done a wonderful job of "keeping the love alive" with these bikes!

I think that this new KLX series is going to make a new step froward for the "ready to race 450" I believe that kawa will be more durable than the others like in the past version :rofl at least I hope so

I have been running my KLX quite a bit this fall and plan to again in the spring before I pull my VFR out of storage. A couple of things:

I have decided to live with the crumby small tank, any GOOD ideas about an auxiliary since I think the Acerbis thing is a lost cause?

Anyone running heated Grips and / or heated vest? It was in the upper 30's when I got home today and I was getting a bit chilly. What can the charging system on the KLX handle and are their any options for beefing up the charging system since I suspect it is going to be weak.

I'm currently running Metzler Karoos, they seem to be OK on the dirt and pavement but the rear locks up REALLY easily now and I'm concerned they will really suck in the wet. Anyone have any experience with these vs. the Conti TKC 80's? Any better stopping or in the wet?

Bark Busters Moose or Acerbis??? I really want big wind deflectors since I'm running this rig late and early in the season.

Need to replace my handle bars since mine are tweaked, any suggestions?

New chain is due this winter, any thoughts on a specific brand before I just go generic?

    Thanks,

    Dr. Lost

I've seen a mount for MSR camp fuel cans which seemed like a slick setup. Ive been thinking about raising my luggage rack enough to stick two cans under there.

I just put on some Elcheapo element-style handwarmers on my 95 klx650c. They work pretty well so far, However the throttle side gets DARN HOT on high. Other side isnt as bad... Most of the heat goes into the bar. I ended up fabricating a small plate that bolts to the handlebar clamp to mount the switch and resistor.

I went with moose "CR high" bend steel bars and Moose gaurds. The gaurds took a little persuasion to fit, and the mounts still dented the front of the tank after a dump or two... But they were cheap:clap You guys who spend 100 bucks on handlebars are freekin nuts:huh

I may have ridden the Flint Hills last year with him. There is one parked behind my F650. We are stopped for a water break at Teeterville Rock, Ks.

That is actually my KLX in your picture. I remember your Black BMW. I think that was the only time I rode the KLX to the Casssody gathering. I didnt get rid of my XRL though. Still have my 94 XR and added an 04 Plated XRR.

My KLX is the only one around here that I know of. There is a guy from Hutchinson Ks. who is a principal for Wichita school that has a 93 I believe. I see him out at Cassody about every month.

I still have my KLX and its up on blocks and winterized for now. I took off all the plastic, sanded it down and made it shine again. New stickers and a Works Performance rear shock went on this year. Just did a valve adjustment with all new gaskets etc. It runs great and looks even better. I found mine on Ebay after a guy pulled it out of a storage unit in Vegas. Been sitting in there for 10 years. Flew out and rode it 1300 miles back to Kansas from AZ. I now have 10K on it and I have over $4000 invested. Its so neat and rare I hate to get rid of it but I have thought about selling it this winter.

Strange and twisted store, but here goes...

Begins three months ago when Ricardo sends me a Craigslist post for a basket case KLX650R. Bike was in pieces, but nearly complete with new rings, piston and some other stuff to get it running again. I'm thinking about buying for a parts bike when Ricky informs me that he's buying it for his GF. Are you nuts, she's gunna kick start a 650 and learn to ride? Who's fooling who here? Well, she buys it. A month or so later yours truly trailers the bike to the house to get her going.

Needed a carb (which I had spare), an ignition coil, tires, chain, sprocket and a bunch of other little do-dads but everything works and the engine is all cleaned, overhauled and looking pretty good. I spend a couple of weekends with Ricky putting together the pieces and getting ready for a first run. transfered some gas from the GS. Looks like we're ready. We took turns kicking that bitch about twenty or thirty times and after not so much as a small pop, she came to life. Runs great. Motor is strong. Even the spare carb seems to be setup just about perfect. Fantastic!!!!

Well, the GF likes the bike, even spins around a parking lot a few times. Problem is, tall seat and 650cc of displacement on a kick start are not gunna make for long term happiness in Ricky land. She should have chosen a different bike. Well, she may have found a fellow ADVrider to make a trade with. We'll see.

Next chapter, this blessed bike runs beautifully, but won't start for shit. Only way to get the cold beast moving seems to be to bump start on one of SF's famous downhill slopes. that's not a long term formula for success. What could be the issue?? Ricky and I go through the whole mess over again. Got spark, check. Compression release, check. Valve clearance, check. Cam timing, check. Day-um. We bump the bike again, and Ricky rides home with his tail between the legs. Half hour later, I'm scouring the Yahoo KLX list for hard start issues. I spot a post saying that every time the guy's bike sits for a month it won't start. Problem turns out to be, high test gas runs out of punch after a few weeks of sitting in a half empty tank. Voilà, I got the gas out of my PD tank which has been sitting on the garage floor for over six months now. Give Ricky the bad news (good news actually). He freshens things up and the beast starts on the first kick. :clap

Moral of the story, don't try to kick-start a bike with old gas in it. Drain the bowls and give it a fresh batch. At minimum, don't expect it to light right up until it's warm.

If the trade doesn't work out, this well used but nicely freshened KLX650R may be available FS. PM Ricky if interested.

    howdy!

so I'm looking for some info here on market value.
I have a 1996 KLX650r for sale. It's VERY clean, with new Kenda K270's and a (dida?) chain this summer. I'm the second owner. starts quick and runs great. it's all titled with the Baja Designs full light kit.

so I'm wondering what the bike is worth. yes, it's for sale on another post!

PM me if you can help, or you're interested in it. Thanks!
