Kombi Instrument Cluster - Swearing and Repairing

    Having bought a wrecked 658, I'll share my cluster F'n findings. Pay attention Fred.


    My original set was forcibly removed and the plug section pulled out. Someone connected the plug back 180 out which fried the electronics. All it would do is display the mileage and the time. New gauges are $1300 CDN and require programming. My Dealers here don't want anything to do with used gauges and insist you buy new. I paid less than that for the whole bike so yeah, no.

    A CDN Inmate crashed his F800GS in BA on the final leg of an AK to TDF ride and I helped him out so the smashed gauges were gifted to me. Got them today.

    So I took my two smashed sets and sorta repaired one. First, remove the 7 torx screws you see on the back and pull the cover off.

    If you need to replace the white plastic OR the faces, turn the needle to the bottom, note it's position and pull straight off. It's a friction fit. Do the same with the tach needle. If not, turn the needles full right, peel back the faces to reveal 3 screws. Remove'm.

    Now, the PC assembly will pop off the rear case. Bend the case edges like you're removing ice cubes. I had to replace the LCD screen so straighten the metal tabs and note the 4 white arm clips.

    I temp installed the PC to the rear case and installed it on the bike.

    With GS911, I confirmed everything worked as it originally did. I then ordered a new case assembly from China.

    Unfortunately, it doesn't work for my 658. I still get a "Incorrect Variant" error code which disables my ABS. It's the correct PN but not the correct software so I'm back to square one. I need one already programmed for a 650 ABS to work. As I said in my ABS retrofit thread, the ABS control unit is VERY specific to the model and so is the Kombi programming. An 800 Kombi won't plug'n'play with a 658 without reprogramming.

    When I get the China housing I'll update this thread. I'll then have a spare Kombi for the two F8'S, but none for the 658. :cry

    And if you're the type that is bothered your speedo reads a few ticks high, remove the cover and carefully turn the needle against the ccw stop, then turn it a bit more to "recalibrate" it. It was possible on my fried unit but do it carefully, at your own risk!

    Aha! It does come apart without breaking things! Seeing is believing, unless this is a ruse just to assault my sensibilities.

    Two things I love:

    1) A challenge
    2) Saving money.

    Taking two broken things and making a good one meets both of those. It's about time the aftermarket is catching up with cheaper spares. I'm trying to cut down the cost of ownership. It shouldn't be a $Grand every time you fall down. These GS's are marketed as the ultimate bike yet the designers give you a somewhat fragile machine with 500 lbs of momentum requiring a Dealer to set right. For every poster in this section I bet there's 100 more lurkers who are busy riding and come here for some quick tips when something goes wrong. I get PM's from Inmates I've never heard of yet there they are on their F GS doing some serious repair in a town I can't pronounce. I do it for them. :D

    I hate being held hostage on these gauges. I can live with the odometer flashing into eternity because it doesn't agree with the rest of the computers but I can't get it legal with the ABS disabled. I put her kombi on this bike and it worked normally except if I ride it this way, the mileage will change then hers will flash. She has that "don't touch my bike" look when I get ideas. I got busted for trying her gauges because the Spark Brite LED looked different. D'oh.

    What I don't post is the things that go wrong. I aint as smert as the sharp bulbs we have here.

    So I was rudely awakened by the Mail Dude this morning. 20 minutes later I had the box finally open. Shipping tape must be cheap in China.

    It appears to be good quality but doesn't have any manufacturer marks on it. I thought it would be like the turn signals - same MFR and marks but without the BMW mark up. Possible reverse engineered then?

    First step was to remove the rubber gasket from the old one since you don't get a new one. It just pulled out and gets placed in the channel friction fit. The circuit board now snaps in place. Sort of. It wasn't seating properly so on close examination I found some excess plastic that needed trimming.

    After trimming, the expensive bits snapped in place. I then noticed the white pegs for the trip odometer and stopwatch buttons needed transferring. That was beyond reasonable effort to remove so I swapped the whole rubber gasket and peg over.

    From there, install the 3 screws behind the faces then front can go on, or so I thought.

    OK, back up in the disassembly stage I mentioned to note where the needle points before removing it. Well, before you install the front cover, plug the gauges in and after the self test, the needles should both be a "0". My tach needle was low. :fpalm

    So I had to disassemble it and with the key off, tweaked the needle and rechecked it.

    All in all, it's a great way to repair your gauges. Considering the Dealer wants $240 for just a new cover and no way to repair your broken mounting pegs without buying a new set, it's fantastic.

    Now if only I could get a Dealer to reprogram it for me. :baldy

    I just replaced the while plastic reflector in my Kombi, and Reaver's posts above are invaluable. Compare my broken reflector with the intact reflector in Reaver's photo, above. A few additional points:

    - The three screws holding the white plastic reflector assembly in place are T-7.
    - Do not touch the flat black surface of the two gauge faces. The oil from your fingers will leave shiny spots (though I couldn't distinguish them once reassembly was complete).
    - To remove the tach face, you must pop out the clear plastic light conduit (lower right in photo). I tried to squeeze the two lugs to push it out, but I finally placed a screwdriver between the pair of clear lugs below and applied pressure until it popped out. I did not care about my broken white plastic reflector, though.
    - Note that the white plastic reflector has two tiny lugs that fit into the circuit board, one at the top and one at the bottom. If you have trouble with installing a replacement reflector, check to see if the lugs were broken off the old reflector and still in the circuit board.

    I was lucky that I had to go no further in disassembly for my repair.

    I have a 09 F650gs and when I turn the key on and the gauges does it sweep the speed indicator sticks at about 40 mph and returns to about minis 5 mph and will not go above about 55 mph even when going over 70 mph. Is there a way to lube the needle shaft?

    Mine starts and stops below zero as well. When I reassembled it, I kept the same start position. That may explain the 10% error we see on BMWs.

    The needle shaft is extremely friction-free, and I suspect lube is inappropriate for such a delicate device. If you choose to disassemble, check to see if the shaft or the underside of the needle is rubbing or hanging up against something, such as the reflector or the gauge face.

    What Fred said. I think lube would make it worse. Everything is nylon and plastic with a loose fit. Let me take some pics.
