    Yeah, I think that would work ok. But if the correct clamp is not really that hard to find, it might be easier just to pick up the right part.

    Anyone know a place to buy the bolts that secure the KTM brey box ( water in the walls ) type luggage rackts to the frame? It looks like a flattend bolt with a slit through the center, and the when you look at the other side , itshas a little tab or bar off the one side so when it rotates it locks it into place? Mine vibrated off it seems.

    Just to weigh in on this, my '02 Adventure came with 48's and my '03 SXC came with 43's. Wrk2surf is correct about the holes for the forks on the top clamp being the same size for either 43's or 48's, however you will want to proceed with caution and pay attention to what the offset is. I'm a bit scattered on the rake/trail/offset stuff, so I'm no expert but I know that my Adventure forks have a 18mm offset and my SXC w/ the 43's has 20mm offset. This is with regards to stock OEM triples. There are KTM hardparts triples available that have adjustable offsets. Of course the offset effects handling so I just wanted to give you a head's up.

    Oh, and my little understanding of offset is the number is inverse to rake (i.e. the 20mm offset makes the forks more raked in and the 18mm offset makes the forks more raked out.) My Adventurer is less nervous and more stable than my SXC, but the SXC steers quicker.

    Could you clarify for me what you mean with regards to the "sxc isn't rubber mounted" and others are "dampened."? Also, weren't the earlier Adventures all 50mm rightside up forks?

    Hi!

    Thanks for the long answer. I guess my offset understanding was oposite, less offset quicker the stearing. I am curently looking at a set of billet Applied Racing Wrap clamps (top and bottom with bar clamps) that someone is selling on ebay for the same price as 2002 EXC used clamps. I manage to figure it out that they have 18mm offset. The only thing that bothers be with these clamps it that thye dont have holes for ignition.

    As for where the forks come from, I found out that these forks were mounted on the next bikes:
    2000 - 250/300/380 SX, MXC, EXC with 295mm of travel
    2001 - 400/525 SX, MXC, EXC with 295mm of travel
    2003 - 625 SX again with 295mm of travel
    2001 - LC4 - 400/640 & 2003 - 640 with 270mm of travel

    I will be gatting the forks in mail in about a week so when they come I will try to figure it out from which bike they actualy are.

    Some clamps have rubber cone inserts at bar clamps to dampen the vibration, here is a pic:

    hey guys, i recently purchased a "well ridden" 99 640e. I know it isnt an adventure, but i havent found a 640e sign in... Awesome bike! Super fun! looking forward to exploring the mtns/deserts with it this summer.

    I am also searching for a few parts, thought i would see if any of you had any these lying around.

    I need a new stock seat or atleast the foam
    A speedo, it has a trailtech, not a fan, looking for any model ktm mechanical speedo that will work. dont care about the mileage
    least importantly passenger pegs, dont need them but would be nice to have.

    Depends on whether you measure rake as the angle from horizontal or vertical. I suppose I see "rake" most often as the smaller number from the vertical, but KTM uses "steering head angle" which is the bigger number from horizontal.The effect of the offset number and the steering head angle number is the same; bigger number = quicker steering.

    My 640 Adventure has a steeper steering head angle than the Enduro/SXC, at 62.5 vs 62 degrees, with trail 124 vs 128mm. Don't know if the earlier models were different.

    The steering axis intersects the ground ahead of the tyre's contact patch (remember the wheel is ~350mm radius and the offset is only ~20mm; it is easy to draw incorrect not-to-scale sketches with the offset a too-big proportion of the wheel's radius which reverses the two points). Less offset moves the contact patch rearwards, away from the steering axis, increasing trail and slowing the steering. But if you change nothing else, you are also reducing the wheelbase, so as with many systems, you can't just take one part in isolation, and the inter-relationships are what makes it art that can contradict the apparent science! :deal





    One KTM suspension tuner here says to tune the following things in this order (with all bushes/oil in good repair as a pre-requisite):
    1. change springs for your weight/style
    2. tune the damping valving
    3. reduce the offset for stability
      (steering angle stays the same for similar cornering ability)
    4. add steering damper
    In his opinion, people create horrible handling bikes by doing the last step first, because it is easiest, but it can hide a multitude of sins.


    I can back that up. My 2003 200EXC was the first year of the EXCs with the WP48s, with the triple bushes. 300mm travel. Up to 2002 they had WP43s and 17mm axles.

    My 2005 640 Adventure has the WP48s with normal twin bushes and 270mm travel. These were used first in 2004, IIRC.

    At least, that's in this part of the world. Bikes do not necessarily have 100% the same spec in all markets e.g. my AUS-spec 200 has 3.8 N/mm fork springs, the USA-spec is 4.0 N/mm.

    Thanks for this, you really know your way aroud suspension. I found out that swaping out forks is more than just machining dow the steam, spcaers for the wheels and making a adapetr for brake caliper.:eek1

    I think I will start reading Race Tech's Motorcycle suspension bible, that I bought in the winter, befor I do any wrenching on the bike.

    I just got the forks today, the part number on them is 0518V721, after some search I found that these should have been on a supermoto. Can someone confirm that?

    How many of you have had your clutch master cylinder piton fail? I can't imagine they cost a lot?

    I believe the rebuild kit for the clutch master is around $40-$50... After 5 yrs of service my 1st one failed, now rather than waiting I just periodicly rebuild it... It only takes about 5 minutes to swap out the old piston, a set of snap ring pliers are handy...
