I hear a good number of people say that they will change oil and do a good maintenance round before a tough ride. "Tough" varies, of course, but here I am talking about a long day ride, paved and dirt, for a total of about 400 miles.

    So, my question:
The oil on my 640A is at full, but has 2000 miles on it. I use the Motorex synthetic stuff. Do I want to change it before the 400 mile day ride next Saturday?

    To rephrase:
It is a busy week and I'd rather ride than work on the bike on Saturday

    Ride it.

Once you do it a few times, an oil change with both filters and a frame burp and refill should take you no more than 20 minutes.

I change the oil after an abusive ride not before one. If I thrash the bike off-road the air filter gets cleaned, the oil changed and the all the busted up crap repaired after the ride. That way I know the bike is ready for whatever I want to do next. That kind of mileage on Motorex is nothing if you weren't hammering the bike, in crazy dust or deep water. So I would just ride unless you have reason to think the oil is toast.

    Don't do what I do!!

Dyno diesel oil 20/50, change every 5k, filters every 10K unless the oil looks dirty or is contaminated.

Lower end at 58k miles, running strong(so far).
Piston replaced times one due to lugging the engine running regular gas or PO overheated it?

If you have to question your maintenance practices then you've answered your question, do what you think is best for your machine. A hard day of riding for my engines is sustained higher rpms on the black top not on and off throttle in the dirt. You didn't mention the airfilter before any day of "hard riding" make sure you clean/ change out your air filter.

Also if you want to know how your oil is performing don't ask other riders, send it off for analysis at regular intervals during its life cycle and see based upon your riding what intervals you need to change your oil. You may find its sooner or later than the specified by the manufacturer.

When you change the oil take a good look at the magnets.

That's going to tell you volumes about your engine and is as important as the change itself.

Pull the plugs carefully and have a good look.
