ktm 950 , 950smr or 990sm???

    Hi to all.

    I would like to now your opinion about the 3 models of Ktm 950 sm , 950 smr , 990 sm. If it would be possible for you to buy one of the 3 models what would it be?
    I have made a test drive only with the 950 sm. Its a great bike but one thing that i didn't like which is the reason that i am considering to buy the smr 950 and not the sm 950 was the driving position and to be more precise the huge tank.
    But what about with the new 990 sm ?I think that the new tank is something like the one that the smr has , although it is bigger , (i think 19 litres...) , it is more stronger newer as a model but in my opinion the smr is the most beautiful of all...

    Basically, the SM990 is the SM950 restyled, with new headlight/tank/side panels, and the FI SuperDuke 990 engine. If you didn't like the riding position of the SM950, you won't enjoy the SM990, it's going to be the same. The SMR950 has a smaller capacity tank than the 950SM, and the SM990 has a LARGER tank. You should ride the 990 Adventure and SuperDuke, just for comparison. The 950 engines (carb'd) have been discontinued, FYI.

    I currently own an 07 SMR


    My advice to you would be to look hard at the standard 950SM.

    Why?

    Value

    You can get a new 06 or 07 950SM at or below dealer cost. If you are willing to go with a low mile used version the savings are even larger. I went to great length to get an "R" version and although I got a great deal I still spent thousands more than I could have on a standard SM.

    Really whats the difference? I mean the R has the bling factor going on but every time I stop after 80 miles to fill with fuel I wonder why I did not opt for the standard SM with the larger tank and save the 2K

    Ok with that off my chest I have to tell you my SMR gets the nod over the my SD 9 rides out of 10.... I have never had more fun on 2 wheels.. The 950SM and SMR are bad azz rides...

    I wish the tank on the SM held MORE! These bikes are so much fun it seems like it was just minutes since the last fill up.

    Thats sucks!

    But I know what that's like. I got this one cheap from some dude with more money than skills. It pitched him off twice and the second time it hurt him a bit. So when I took possesion I had to order a few cosmetic pieces and a front wheel. I stared at it for hours parked in the living room. What really sucked is the weather was just fine while I waited for parts.

    The thing has flat out been the craziest funnest bike I have ever owned. Thank goodness I didn't know that for sure while I waited. It would be pure torture to be denied riding it now. But now you know too. Sorry. :evil

    I think the 950 SM-R is the best looking. I also like the ergos of the SM-R better than the regular SM. My dealer offered me a nice price on a leftover SM-R, so I bought it in late December.

    If the 2008 990 SM was coming to the USA, I would have waited for it to arrive and bought that. The extra power and fuel capacity are HUGE pluses to me. It's not being imported, so I bought the SM-R a couple months ago. I'm happy with it so far, but have only put about 700 miles on it (it's winter).

    The small fuel tank on the SM-R is a PITA. I really prefer going 150+ miles between stops. Fuel light on at 90-something miles just sucks. I hate stopping that often. I don't find the seat on the SM-R to be that bad. No worse than my DRZ's stock seat, but I wear padded mtn bike shorts under my riding pants. I've yet to put in a full-day on the bike, but I'm hoping that 400+ mile days in the twisties will be OK. If not, a Renazco seat will be coming.

    I've got a SMR and love the ergos compared to the portly, leg splayed SM. The looks do not hurt it a bit either. The H2W jetting will yield better performance, (search jetting, its a must do IMHO) and better MPG, I'm hittin the low fuel light at 105-107 miles now, add 33-38 to "bone dry" and I'm not complaining too much. The every other day fill ups on the commute circuit are a PITA, long rides less so as I stop every 1.5-2.5 hours anyway to stretch and such.

    To revive an ancient thread:
    What about removing the left muffler on an SMR and adding Ned's aux fuel tank?

    I am currently looking for something cool to replace my GSXR1000 with for sport touring duty, and all out corner carving on my 2 trips a yr to Deals Gap. I am lookign at an older Ducati 900SS, and a 950 SMR. Obviously the SMR is 4x the price, but much newer with a mere 1400 miles on it. Fuel capacity does matter to me, as I will had off thru appalacia for 2500-3500 mile rides that consume 4-5 days.

    Here in TX, there is alot of pavement and not much in the way Dual Sporting.....so I would go SMT or the like. Now if I lived in AR or CO.....9XX Adventure.

    I do multi-day trips like that every year on my SMR and fuel hasn't been a problem. I do have to think about where fuel is when I plan the route for the day and be conscious of it, but finding gas every 90 - 120 miles hasn't been a problem. My fuel light comes on around 115 (+/- 5). I've gone as far as 150 miles on a tank, but it was nearly empty. Sometimes I do fill up early to ensure that I get through a remote section without needing to stop, but that is the exception. I carry a hose to siphon fuel from fellow riders (never needed it) and on one trip to Arkansas, carried 1.5 liters of fuel in a bottle (never needed it).
