KTM 950/990 ADV - 950 SE Kickstand Relocation Bracket

    This is a completely bolt-on bracket to relocate the kickstand from the engine to the frame behind the left footpeg. The bracket is made from 0.250" cold rolled steel and powder coated black.

    Fits all years of 9X0 Adventure and 950 SE models.

    No longer will you have to worry about cracking the engine from a hit to the kickstand, or mounting the bike while fully loaded by stepping on the left peg.

    A few months back I started on my version of a kickstand relocation bracket for the 950. I started by copying a design I saw another inmate here made.

    Rev 1.
    Flat template made out of card stock:

    Came out OK, but since the guy I copied the design from has a Super Enduro (no centerstand), this design is going to cause an interference between the kickstand and the centerstand.

    I drew it up in AutoCAD and got it off to my metal fabricator for a prototype. Hopefully in the next few weeks I'll have a finished product for all us 9x0 owners and we'll never have to worry about cracking the engine case anymore.

    Well several weeks went by (8 actually, he has a busy shop) and this is what he came up with:

    He had to make it in 2 pieces because of the compound bend on the back piece, and planned on welding it together.

    I test fit it onto the bike and it was not exactly right, it interferes with the centerstand retracting completely to the full up position. I marked it up, made modifications to the drawings, and stopped by the shop to show them.

    He is going to cut out another piece, we also came up with a way that it can be made out of 1 piece so it will not have to be welded.

    OK, so here is Rev 2 ready for a test fit:

    I got it on the bike and since I can't get things right the second time, it looks like there will be a Rev 3. All in all, it fits very good, only it needs a few minor tweaks to be perfect:

    Rev 3 changes will be delivered this Friday morning to the fab shop. Most notibly will be a triangulation bracket on both sides to stiffen the bend where the kickstand attaches.

    Hopefully I will have the next one before I leave (going to Colorado for 2 weeks) otherwise it will have to wait.

    The part seen here is 0.125 cold rolled steel but I plan to have the final version made out of the same thickness stainless. And then powder coated black. EDIT: The final product is made from cold rolled, not stainless steel.

    If all goes well I should have a viable product for the market by sometime in August. I have no idea just yet what the price will be so please bear with me, since the fab shop will be basing it on time and materials.

    Worst case, I have a very expensive bracket I made for myself.

    Nicely done!

    How stiff is it. I would think that .125 might be not be stiff enough for the vertical. That's a long lever. I used .250 and it still has a little flex.

    The bottom "arm" is being stressed upward in the vertical direction and the vertical arm will resist that force. I always try to think about where the stress are trying to bend the bracket and what resists that force.

    As I looked at it, the forces on the kick stand are trying to bend the bracket where it mounts to the left side center stand bumper bracket. That is resisted by the vertical leg being in compression. The kickstand is also trying to bend the bracket inward at the bend where the bottom horizontal is bent to be the vertical leg. That force is resisted by the stiffness (directly related to the thickness) of the bracket itself. This could also be resisted by bending an "L" in the vertical leg. That effectively increases the stiffness of the bracket.

    This is a very basic description and there are actually a lot of different forces at work. I'm sure an engineer could calculate it out, but that's not me.

    There was some flex in it, which is why I am planning on adding the triangulation pieces to the sides.

    I also plan to increase the thickness to 0.250 if the flex is too much.

    The bungee is just to hold the kickstand up because I don't have the springs installed. The hole for the spring post was tapped at the wrong angle.

    Great work!
    One area that may need attention is where the chain runs over/near the bracket. Extra clearance here will ensure chain-bounce won't cut into it.

    I noticed that too. It is close when up on the centerstand but when off the centrerstand there is a good amount of clearance. But I do plan to trim away some of the material at the rear just to be safe. Here is a pic when it was off the centerstand:

    I did more testing last night and I think I'm going to look into thicker material for the next rev instead of waiting. There was some vertical flex as MJS stated above, so it would be best to address it this time.

    Excellent!!! After the sidestand relocation thread from hell and numerous folks attempting to design, fab and sell something, here PABiker comes along with a damn near finished product. Like stated before, it's great that the product is evolving quickly and we may be seeing something "real" real soon.
    BTW, thicker is better for this bracket. It needs to carry the full load of the bike for a sidestand pivot turn without flex. It's appears very close. Finally.:clap

    From stock the sidestand is attached to the engine case, it put some stress on it and it can damage it (cracks, oil leak).

    Thanks guys, I do plan on seeing this through. Just not sure what the cost will be until I perfect the design.

    Heading to the fab shop in the morning to discuss the next rev, and it will definitely include making it thicker.
