Ktm 950 Adv - Head Shake

    MY 2005.5 KTM 950 ADV, HAS A MEAN HEAD WOBBLE WHEN YOU CHOP THE THROTTLE FROM 50+MHP DOWN THROUGH 40MPH. IF YOU USE A LIGHT GRIP ON THE BARS DURING THESE SPEEDS THE WOBBLE IS VERY DANGEROUSE. ARE THERE ANY OTHER RIDER EXPERINCEING THE SAME?

    Has it done this from new?
    Have you checked your tyre pressure?
    How many miles on the tyres?
    Have you tried re-balancing the front wheel?
    Have you checked the headstock?

    As stock front Pirelli wears, a wobble can develop. Mine was most noticeable with loaded panniers. However, I cured mine completely by simply checking all my fork adjustments and making sure they were at the standard settings. It turned out my spring pre-load was way soft. After that, no wobble even hands off.

    What Ant said... particularly a loose steering head will create a excessive decel wobble.
    You can also add to the list seriously off compression & rebound damping and spring preload adjustments.

    My 950's front end is busy compared to my other bikes, but nothing like you have described. The only time I get head shake is in deep sand, and I plan on putting a stabilizer on it. Have you checked head bearing adjustment, wheel /tire balance and runout? I've also noticed that the steering on my 950 is sensitive to rear shock preload adjustments. My 05 S had loose head bearings as delivered from the dealer. A few other people reported loose head bearings on their 05 950's too. Rob.

    The "Sport" settings in the owners manual is a good starting point...and don't forget to crank up the rear pre-load if you're running luggage or a passenger, although failure to do that usually results in a headshake during acceleration or high speed runs due to the front end being light

    i had the same problem with mine. it got worse as the stock scorpion wore. i just replaced the bent front wheel with a new one, and put a tkc on. no more wobble.

    i think some of it has to do with bike geometry and tire grip. this bike seems to be very sensitive to both.

    my old RZ500 was a death-trap on de-acceleration. if you didn't have both hands on the bars, it would buck you off between 50-30mph.

    I had the exact same problem on my 05 S model from new. I just set up my suspension on the sport settings and switched to tkc's and the wobble is no more. Unfortunately I made both changes at once so cannot be sure what had the most effect. I would certainly try adjusting your suspension first. I also noticed the problem was worse with luggage.

    I developed a similar problem post Baja, then I noticed my front rim is roughly octagonal :lol3

    My 05.5 developed a scary head shake as the stock scorps neared 4k miles. Worst was between 30-40 mph. I could coast down from 60+, in neutral (no engine braking), with hands off (but very near!) the bars. At 35 the grips would slap my hands so hard it would hurt. Switched to TKCs in Ouray and the shake was gone absolutely completely. Unfortunately I also increased front preload (alot) at the same time. So which was it? Well, with 2500 miles on the TKCs the rear was toast and the front was half gone but still smooth and stable, so I switched back to scorps for commuting. Guess what? She's twitchy again and I haven't changed the suspension this time. I'll wait to see what happens, but this may be my last set of scorps.

    BTW, new scorp front has not been balanced. Installed at home, but the TKC was installed in a prking lot.

    That sounds exactly like the problem that a fellow I met on the Washington State Adventure Ride had, is that you Dan? At any rate, by chance I met TOHC the other day and he had a similar problem. While not the obvious this was what he thought was wrong with his bike.

    sportbikes do it too...

    I found a slight head shake with a new tire... decellerating, downhill...

    When the tire wears the shake gets worse the more worn the tire is.

    Scotts just came out with their stabilizer for the 2005
    ktm adventure. I put one on and it stopped any and all
    headshake, regardless of anything else involed.

    My 950 has had slight head shake since new if you turn loose the bars it shakes but when holding on I dont feel it so I dont turn loose . A few weeks back I was running about 60 on a very cobby paved road while adjusting my face shield I hit a hole in the road and a severe head shake developed , it stopped as soon as I got both hands on the bars. Front tire was worn out at that time. I replaced the tire last week , Tightined and trued the wheel with the tire off, mounted and balenced the tire . Everything was fine when remounted , I could turn loose of the bars on the highway and no shake . The new pirelli I mounted is out of round side to side , its is noticeable when on the pegs and watching the tire but doesent seem to affect the handeling . Coming back from Arkansas monday I felt a little shake when turning loose of the bars . I noticed I was missing a wheel wieght when I got home , I would say balance is critical. The gold wing and valkryie some times have a shake problume , the cure for them is to tighten steering bearings to a little tighter preload then factory spec. SEYA

    The steering head on my brothers new 950 was loose. He only has a couple of hundred miles on the bike. When I rode it on the road, the bike felt planted. Very stable. He was on some dirt roads and he said it was banging.

    someone told me that KTMs come in the crate without the headset bearings torqued. This would explain a wide variation.

    of course one of these wouldn't hurt:
