I did a search and reviewed the service CD, but to no avail...

Can anyone point me to cam timing specs for the 990 Adventure?

Specifically, I'm looking for timing clearance and open/close degrees. Lift would be nice too, but not required.

    Thanks.

Good luck on that. I couldn't get that info out of KTM. My Yamaha manuels have it for them but try to get anything out of KTM is impossible. I finally measured it but I can't find were I wrote it down. My bad memory remembers about .333 intake lift and duration was less than 212. Exhaust duration something like 242. If you need this you probably need exact figures so this isn't any good for ya. Found the specs on the cam I'm running now:evil. Lot of room for more lift.

Hmmmm, if full timing specs aren't readily available, would you happen to remember where the lobe centers should be set?

Pretty easy to check next time you do a valve check.

True, but that alone will only tell me what they are which might not necessarily be what they should be...

This falls into the "Trust, but Verify" catagory.

Interesting how only the rear intake cam has a blue dot. All other cams have an orange dot... I wonder why this is so?

    QC shift markings?

In general we know that 990 SD cams will fit and run in the 990 ADV heads. I think that there are several 950 engines running 990 SD cams too (flanny i think is running SD cams in his 950 ADV)

Maybe I have one cam from each: 950, 990A, 990SD, and RC8. :huh

What do the KTM 990 Adventure, a Honda 3-wheeler from the late 1980’s and the lowly stock Kawasaki KLR 650 all have in common?

They all use almost exactly the same cam profiles…

In other words, the cams in the 990 Adventure are very mild in almost every aspect. Compared to cams used in many motorcycles today, the 990 Adventure cams have short duration, little overlap and do not much valve lift. The design is even more pedestrian than those used in mid-1980’s universal Japanese motorcycles.

    Procedure

I measured cam timing at .040” (1mm) valve lift since this is what MegaCycle Cams and most Japanese motorcycle manufacturers use as their standards.

Since I didn’t have the right shims to set lash to zero, I measured timing and lift using running lash and with lash set to .040”. When using running lash, I deducted the running lash from .040" to obtain the correct checking lift. For example, if the running lash was .006", I checked opening and closing points at .034" valve lift (.040" minus .006" = .034"). To double check the results, I then set the lash as close as possible to .040” and checked opening and closing points just as the lobe contacted the valve bucket.

To get consistent readings, I had to remove three cams while measuring one. With a total of only eight lobes on four cams for two cylinders, valve spring pressure causes the motor to suddenly rotate forward each time any lobe went over center and start to close.

Also, to get consistent closing point readings, I had to temporarily replace the spring-loaded cam chain tensioners with solid pieces snugged down to take up any cam timing chain slop. The force exerted by the cam lobe as the closing point would over power the spring-loaded tensioners and induce as much as 4 degrees crank variation.

    Conclusions

By all measures, the stock KTM 990 Adventure cams are very mild. They are low lift, short duration cams. Other motorbikes that have very similar cam specs the lowly KAWASAKI KLR-600 single (1984—1986) and KLR-650 (1987—1992) and the CPSA-banned HONDA ATC-200X, TRX-200SX (1986—1988).

BTW, these cam specs are also very close to another off-road monster, the Honda XR200.

Excellent work BillyD! Now I need to get busy with the 950 measuring. I wonder if they are going to be any different.... My brother seems to think that the EFI designed cams are going to be more mild and different overlap (less) that a carb'd bike. Time will tell on this one and who owes who a beer.

Nice chrome header on that banned three wheeler!

Hey Clif, did you replace the buckets at the same time as putting in the SD cams or leave'm and run it?

Webb cams builds them for someone racing in Europe. They couldn't tell me if it would clear the pistons without valve relief. Then I bought a Husaberg and lost interest in my 990:cry.
