Nice ride report Joel. I think I would have turned around after getting blown off the road. After seeing the snake, I would have definitely taken that as a sign. You take your assignments very seriously. How did the drills go? You can do most of them in that parking lot by your house. You must really want to work on your hill climbing. Here's a new assignment for you. Get that KTM dirt bike together. Much lighter and much more nimble than the XR and has electric start. The air cooled thing is nice, but don't get hung up on it. I'm still on my original radiators and they're all bent up. Probably dropped and crashed my bike more times than you.

I already have one and am VERY happy with it. The thought of buying another one and motarding it did cross my mind!

These are great all around bikes and can handle freeway speeds with ease. It took me only 30 minutes to adjust the valves yesterday, not having Fing radiators to take off for access to the valve covers was terrific! My only complaint is the deeply recessed spark plug and the special wrench that's need to get to it.

I love mine but they could be a bit lighter and your right the spark plug is a pain to get to.

My wife saw this in the paper yesterday. Seems like some progress in the ANF.

    Quote

"Over the weekend, about 10,000 people will flock to the Angeles National Forest, including the 97,848 acres that were reopened Monday, said Stanton Florea, spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service. The Magic Mountain Wilderness, the vast majorities of Pleasant View Wilderness, West Fork of the San Gabriel River, Rincon Shortcut Road, Millard Campground, Chilao, Bandito, Horse Flats, Meadow Loop, Manzanita Loop and Coulter recreation areas reopened for the first time since the Station Fire devastated the region last year, Florea said."

I borrowed my bro's spark plug wrench to remove, inspect and replace the stock plug after 1950 miles. Motion Pro makes a slim profile 18 mm wrench specifically made for XRs, Rocky Mtn carries them.

Overall a great bike, and MUCH lighter than a full up big bike. After I get my 4 gal tank, removeable 12" windscreen, and some soft saddlebags, it'll be a capable bike that can do medium range rides. I'll only use the big tank for longer rides and get another petcock for it for quick changes stock to big tank.

I took off all of the little metal cable loops and crap that Honda is notorious for doing, I like simplicity and zip ties!

I do have my eyes another lighter dual sport bike for tougher "truck to" rides; I want to ride the CP-SLO Penguin ride next year, that looked like too much fun!

you know the jimmy school is paying off. in the past, i always look for the easiet and cleanest line, but yesterday i chose the shitty sections and ruts. stood on the pegs most of the time, was less tired and relaxed. i don't think it's the bike, it's all about the rider......:evil

the xr is getting electrified soon...the last major part needed came in last week. though i have to get the exc together first before i take this one apart. the exc needs is a new paint job and hopefully i will be able to find the parts that are stored in different places...:becca

stew, if you ride alone, stay on the the fire roads...easier for the rangers or others to spot you in the event something you don't want happens.

Could you xplain this a little bit to those of use who Kain't afford Jimmy?

Did you crash before because you'd contort yourself to take the 'right' path and then lose it?

Now you're more 'go with the flow'' and you take some hits to avoid larger ones?

    or?:ear

    Why'd you 'choose' shitty sections?

good you asked. but really hard to explain for liability reason........:lol2

after jimmy set up my bar and levers, the first 30 minutes of the class did it for me.

it was here i discovered there was a stubborn demon living in me...:lol3

Was gonna give it a try today, but actually got a hold of a ranger on the phone before i headed over there. He said it's only open to hiking and MTBs at this time. Maybe another month or 2 before vehicles can and use it.

    You like the desert?
Yes, it's starting to get warm, but you can ride as much as you like and never do the same thing twice.

I was surprised as well. Was in Azusa Canyon OHV a few months ago and the ranger then said it could be a year. Baby steps.
