I did not ride, just helped some riders get dropped off with bike at Palmdale and extra set of hands if needed...

but it was looking pretty good!

embassy suites had fewer bikes lined out front at 7pm than last year, but that slowly changed as the evening went on:

    [IMG] [IMG]
    ^^these guys are from washington!

Saw some riders/organizers that I hadn't seen since last year, and met quite a few new ones. It's pretty awesome walking up to a random person and sharing the same love for the desert on 2 wheels. Finally met Abhi from bike-urious...they were doing it on Africa Twins this year

6 hours later: It's 5am and the bikes are already lining up down the road in front of Palmdale Supercycles. D37 representatives, volunteers, and sweep are all working furiously to get the riders checked in, tech'd, gear bags loaded, and parking lot clear.

3 hours later - and over 490 riders are on their way!

It's really not that far between Palmdale and Barstow...roughly 87 miles. So I joined the volunteer convoy to Barstow for a traffic-free, scenic drive through the desert.

truly magestic stuff...I really want to come back and ride each spot

2 gas stops for the day - one at lake los angeles, one at Helendale/Silver Lake.

And a warm, 80 degree arrival in Barstow:

Some ride reports on the day 1 sand washes/hills:
-there were 2 big sand washes and they wipe you out and take out your confidence!
-that was a 2 stroke day!
-man there are some FAST guys on big bikes! Even in the sand washes!

    Braaaap!

I could only help out for day 1, so hopefully the 2nd day will be just as good!

Personally, my ride did not go super well. Got two flats, one a nail just after hitting 165 St just south of Lake Los Angeles and then a pinch flat from a rock on Stoddard Wells Rd. I also had a guy in front of me in the deep sand near El Mirage that was having problems and did a 90 deg uncontrolled turn in front of me as I was starting to pass. Laid it in the sand, but as a minimum sprained my wrist. Started this morning and called it a day at Baker. Swollen wrist and really hurt. Still a lot of miles for a 72 year old. Could not have asked for nicer weather.....maybe a slight breeze to move the dust would have been nice.

Knowing when to stop is putting your experience to work. I'm 10 years behind you but hoping I'm still riding by then. Hope you enjoyed the ride despite the problems!

Here are some pics from the Rocky Gap portion at the end of Saturday. If you rode through there between about 1:30 and 4:30 pm, you’ll probably be in the video or pictures.
I’m going upload the video of the same section once I get it edited.

My first LAB2V is in the books with both the bike and the body in roughly the same shape as when I started.

    My trip:

Thanksgiving evening Bhavesh (@breakdirt916) gave me a ride up to the start in Palmdale. He was volunteering with the event after not being able to complete his 2stroke rebuild. After a fitful night of sleep it was time to start the ride.

5:45 am the line at Palmdale super cycles was around the block. A slow walk through the check in and some tracks from @bigtodd and I was off around 7 am. The routes were fun and challenging. I decided that as a first timer I would do all the “easy” routes for the experience. “Easy” is a relative term, and after my 2 days I have a good chunk to go before I try the hard routes.

I was a little overwhelmed with the whole roll chart and all the other riders for the first 30+ miles, then I started to settle in and nav and nerves both got more natural. About 60 miles in I was having issues with the second looonnnggg stretch of way deep sand when I saw a familiar flash go by about 30 mph faster than I was going, BigTodd was passing people with ease. After the second time my XR650R got tired and took a nap I realized that 2nd gear was the wrong approach (I had heard that before somewhere......T,T,B, and many others). The rest of the day was spent at a much higher speed and the third long sand section was hit in 3rd and 4th gear and the miles ticked by. Got to the finish line around 2 and Todd was already changed and was loading tracks for day 2. Chatted with a lot of great riders, including Dave and Jay from WA, we somehow managed to have matching WLF jerseys both days! M

My mind was trying to grasp how I was going to go 60% farther on day two and still make the cutoff times. Sleep was elusive and I headed out to swap the air filter and check the bike over at 5:30 am. I decided to let the first wave of early riders go then trail behind the big pack. I left around 6:45 and found relatively empty trails. I got to the 90 mile check in Baker well before 9:00 am, said hi to my WLF team members, then stared off to Sandy Valley. Sandy Valley is very well named. More sand than day one but it was spread out over a much greater distance. I made a point of keeping up the speed (4th and 5th gear) and was actually passing people pretty consistently. There was a few long stretches of deep sand and some pretty hard climbs that were able to string out all the riders. I went down a few times on the sharp deep sand corners. After one nasty dump on my right side I could not get the bike started. After way too many kicks I went into triage mode. When I finally checked the kill button it was covered in sand and stuck in “off”. After I cleaned it the XR fried right up and off I went. There were many sections where top speed was hit and held for a good stretch, so much fun! Lunch was served at SV high school, delicious pulled pork, a top off of gas, and even a bike wash! After lunch was a very familiar ride to the Pahrump “Noobs”, we did the A-hole ride from the Pahrump side.

Got to Red Rock canyon around 2, 1.5 hours ahead of the cutoff time. There were about 20 guys waiting to go into the canyon. I thought about getting into the que, but after not doing the other “hard” sections I felt guilty about doing the signature hard section so I hit the last easy section into the Orleans. Crossed the line at 2:50 and then got my picture taken with the show girls. BigTodd, Dunerat, and twowheelsgood welcomed me with a cold beer, and it tasted damn good.

At the banquet my raffle luck continued and I won 4 times. Sunday the wife and I toured Boulder Damn, had a drink with my new friend Dave from Washington, and managed to be on the winning Bowling team in the D37 tourney. All in all a fun weekend.

Thanks D37 for a great ride, all the volunteers for their time, and all the riders for all the positive vibes. I will do this again and again.

If you left a Bell helmet, Camelbak, gloves and protective collar in The Orleans' parking lot, Paul Flanders has them.

The Ramada Inn called me about a set of keys that their gardener found this morning in the rocks on the right side of where the luggage trailer and white van were parked. They have been turned in to the front desk.

If they are yours, please call the Ramada Inn at 760-256-5673 and claim them.
