Rode last year for the first time with two guys who did it the year before and they had me buy the rugged radio brand of radio. LOVED IT. And would highly recommend it for bike to bike comms.
+Speeds up the ride, less stops
+Lowers stress thinking about "where are they, did something happen?"
+Day two, early in the morning, down a sand wash, into the sun with 500 riders is a lot of dust and very limited visibility......Our 3rd rider passed us while we were peeing and didn't see him go by....thus the during the radio checks when he fell out of range, we kept slowing down thinking he was behind us. Turns out he was in front of us. And it took a long time to get back together again. (We made the mistake of not communicationg the pee break because we "thought for sure we would see him and he would see us. Neitther did! Visibility is probably less than 5 feet in that situation.
    +Plus they are just FUN
+Also can mention washouts and other cautions on the fly. Radios saved a massive wipeout.

Have only done it once, so no expert.....but if lunch last year was in Ridgecrest and this year is in helendale. Then as the crow flys it is either a short afternoon or more technical in nature?? Guessing we'll spend some time in Stoddard that afternoon:-)

Ok. So it turns out that Palmdale is not as close to LAX as it appears on the map. I will be landing at about 5:00 PM on Thursday, who wants to share an Uber/Taxi/Limo* from LAX to Palmdale?

I would head over to D37 message board...good chance you can find someone driving up from OC/LA area with a spot in their truck

Greyhound from LA to Palmdale is $16...but you may need to Uber from LAX to bus stop

Hey Charles, a little over month to go and only 4 pages? Where are all the ADV guys this year? If this year's Day 1 is similar to the last time we had lunch in Helendale, everyone is in for a treat. That was one of my favorite routes.

Couple of notes to first time riders, especially if you plan to ride on your big adventure bike:
    1) Look over the map that comes in the package you get at check in. Make sure you see where you have options to avoid sections meant for smaller dual sport bikes.
    2) Know your capabilities; if you can ride a BMW GS Adv down a river wash of 8" plus sand in 3rd gear or higher great, if you can't, look for the go around. Same goes for HARD WAY canyons and hill climbs. (I speak from experience)
    3) Use the roll chart. It details lots of info that does not show up on the GPS tracks.
    4) The GPS tracks are great to use and are typically spot on, just follow the line. But use the roll chart along with your GPS. Also, as one of the peeps that will be loading your GPS routes, PLEASE clear your unit before handing it to us. Having to wait while your 185 favorite tracks/routes load on our computer's Base Camp so we can load the day's tracks is very aggravating.

See you all in Palmdale :ricky

    Big T!
    yessss!
i didn’t want to give out spoilers but the last time we rode that way was 2013 and it had rained the day before and was sprinkling that morning. the sand was like wet beach sand!
there is some good technical riding on this route (if it’s what they go with AKA what the BLM allows).
so with the BLM, a lot of the time it’s not that they won’t allow an area or trail but it’s like LAB2V has to start on square one every year. it’s weird that they don’t just streamline their process but it’s almost like a power trip.
    anyway, i’m off my soapbox.
    LET’S RIDE!!!

I am so ready to do this ride! Thanks to all for the very informative posts and all the encouragement coming our way.

My Montana will be empty upon arrival, and my roll chart followed.
