Did a little warm up ride yesterday and did lots of tracks with ribbon markers on the bushes ... getting fired up as the big ride gets closer.
This will be my first labv. Im looking forword to navigating with a roll chart for the first time. my question is the odometer on my 990 is not resetable by tenths. So if at any point I get off course there will be no way of getting my mileage and the roll chart to line up again?. Is this going to be a problem? I would really like to fallow the roll chart insted of following the yellow brick road on the gps.
i've had the same issue back when i rode a KLR650...
use your GPS as an odo.
as for the rollchart. i glance at it as i come to turns or certain areas for warnings/wash outs/etc but i use the GPS probably 90% of the time.
i've had to do the math when i had to backtrack and while annoying it's doable.
also, you are constantly resetting your odo on the ride. probably every 5 or 10 miles is a reset.
I would recommend getting a TrailTech or similar computer for the event. It will make your life much easier when using roll charts. Installation is pretty simple as well.
Just checked the website, and of course they discontinued the old standby Endurance model. I'm sure you could find one somewhere.
The promoters will stress relying on the roll chart over GPS so that slower MPH tortoise sections are noted.
On the 990 you we have a looong day. BTDT
Get real comfortable with sand
Fresh 908 and a steering damper. Start lifting weights now
Last year I did this on my CRF450 - awsome ride.
This year I will doing this event with a passenger, my GF, on my KTM 640 enduro (easy route!).
We did a 5 hour ride in mammoth last month - no issues.
I did buy proper dust masks for this ride. Trying out the 'wolf snout' as my bandana last year was awful.
there is the regular route.... hard way off shoots from the regular route.... and there is an ADVenture route.
even the ADVenture route is more than just gravel roads. 4 years ago we took some short cuts through the ADVenture route cuz of a flat and other bike issues that put us behind, and i will say there was some slightly difficult sand/deep gravel to go through.
we saw a 2 up BMW 1200GS and they were all over the place. sand snakes for miles. looked like she had walk part of the way as well.
Sand snakes r freaky I've heard
True there isn't an easy route.... 'Adventure route' sounds more fun than calling it the '200 mile sand wash route'.
The easy route is the main highway!
